Company Background

 Nigerian Pipelines & Storage Company (NPSC) is a subsidiary

of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation which was established in 2016
from Pipelines and Product Marketing Company (PPMC) as a Strategic Business
Unit (SBU)). It is one of the four SBU under the downstream Directorates of
NNPC.
 NPSC is responsible for the refined oil deliveries to the petroleum retailers,
supply and receiving network of pipeline and storage depots.
 NPSC vision is to be the preferred Pipelines and storage company by
delivering efficient transportation of crude oil and petroleum products.
 Its mission is to provide unrivalled customer service through efficient and
profitable transportation and storage of crude oil and petroleum products.
Work responsibilities

 The Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) department plays a crucial role in an oil depot
to ensure the safety of employees, protect the environment, and comply with regulations. Activities I
carried out here
1. Participated in training on safety practices, emergency response, and the proper use of safety
equipment.
2. Managing and maintaining safety equipment such as fire extinguishers, fire trucks, booster pumps and
personal protective gear.
3. I was involved in the Development and testing emergency response plans for incidents like spills, fires,
or accidents to minimize harm and environmental damage.
4. Assisting in ensuring that every ongoing activity in the depot complies with safety and environmental
regulations by researching and understanding relevant laws and regulations.
5. Contributed and Participated in environmental initiatives, such as waste management programs or
sustainability projects, to minimize the environmental impact of the depot’s operations.
6. Assistied in the preparation and documentation of safety reports for the management, summarizing
safety and environmental performance.

 The operations department in NPSC depot involve a range of activities related to the storage,
handling, and distribution of petroleum products, plays a crucial role in ensuring the efficient and safe
movement of petroleum products from storage to distribution, while also maintaining strict adherence
to safety and environmental standards. Activities I carried out here:
1. Initially, I spent time observing and shadowing My supervisors and experienced operations personnel’s
to gain an understanding of the depot operation processes and safety protocols.
2. I Assisted with inventory management tasks, which may include tracking product levels, conducting
stock reconciliations, and helping to optimize inventory turnover.
3. I Participated in quality control procedures, such as product sampling and testing, to ensure that stored
petroleum products meet quality.
4. I assisted with the loading of petroleum products into trucks. This involved operating equipment like
pumps and valves under supervision.
5. I helped in maintaining accurate records and documentation related to product movements, quality
tests.
6. Collaborated with other departments within the depot and external parties, such as suppliers to
facilitate the smooth flow of operations.

 Quality Control department: is a very important department in the
facility. The activities carried are based on quality control and monitoring of
petroleum product. These are carried out to ensure quality of the petroleum
product this is to ensure that satisfactory performance is given to the
customers. Activities carried out here:
1. I conducted product sampling
2. I conducted visual inspections on products
3. I performed laboratory analyses, including flash point testing, distillation
analysis, density measurement, and temperature assessment, and being
proficient in various analytical methods
4. I utilized laboratory apparatus such as a fume cupboard, hydrometers with
various ranges, and sampling bottles
Tests carried out in the Quality Control
department

 The maintenance department is responsible for ensuring the proper
functioning and upkeep of equipment, machinery, and infrastructure. They perform
regular inspections, preventive maintenance, and repairs to ensure smooth
operations and minimize downtime. They also handle tasks like equipment
calibration, troubleshooting, and implementing safety measures. It's a crucial role in
maintaining the efficiency and safety of the depot. Activities carried out here:
1. I spent time observing and learning from experienced maintenance technicians to
understand the depot’s maintenance processes.
2. I assisted with routine maintenance tasks, such as inspections, lubrication, servicing
and minor repairs on equipment and machinery. This could include pumps, valves,
Generators.
3. I Participated in preventive maintenance programs by following maintenance
schedules and performing tasks such as changing filters, belts, and other
components.
Skills and Knowledge acquired

 Safety awareness
 Technical skills related to equipment operation, maintenance, quality control and safety procedures
 Understanding of Local, state and federal regulations that govern the depot’s operations
 Inventory management skills(monitoring and managing inventory levels and ensuring product availability
for distribution
 Improved communication and team work skills by collaborating with fellow interns and colleagues from
various departments
 Developed problem solving skills by assisting with trouble shooting and addressing operational issues
 Gained a deep understanding of the oil and energy industry including the supply chain, distribution and
roles of depot’s in the industry
 Built professional relationships and networking within the industry which can be valuable for future
career opportunities
 Developed the ability to adapt to a dynamic and fast paced industry, where conditions and priorities can
change rapidly

Recommendation

 I want to say sincerely that the industrial training is of great importance to

the student’s field of study and therefore great attention should be given to
it.
 The Industrial Training supervisors should improve their relationship with the
students and give them detailed information on whatever they are doing, to
make them work independently.
 Firms and companies should also assist the students on training with funds to
serve as incentives and financial aids.
Conclusion

 The few months I spent at the Nigerian Pipelines and Storage Company
Satellite Depot, Lagos State was an eye opening, great level of exposure and
a worthwhile experience. The practical knowledge helped me to understand
better the process associated with the Analysis and Distribution of Petroleum
products.
 The experience exposed me to the practical aspect of Petroleum Products
Storage conditions, Distribution profile and Laboratory Analysis. I had the
privilege to work with competent Engineers and Technicians at the Depot to
execute their various operations.
 It also exposed me to Engineering projects supervision and how to make
practical decisions on Engineering projects.
