Introduction

 Good day to you all, today i will discuss about a light dimmer using a triac and a diac. I
hope you will learn something from it. There are many types of devices that will make a
light dimmer but we use a triac and a diac to produce a light dimmer.
 Light dimmer are devices that are used to lower or higher the brightness of the light. Using
a potentiometer, that act as a rheostat, we can change the intensity of the light output.
 TRIAC (Triode for Alternating Current) is a device that is widely used in power control
and switching applications. It is usually called a bidirectional triode thyristor or bilateral
triode thyristor.
 DIAC (Diode for Alternating Current) is a diode that only conducts a current after the
breakover voltage that has been attain momentarily.
Literature Survey
1. “Power Electronics Triac Light Dimmer” Rochelle Stortz and Brian Taraba, Team 277
2/2/05 “EE362L,
Electronic dimmer (light varying device) is best version to regulate the intensity
of light as well as the rotating devices since it doesn’t have much internal power loss as
of electrical component’s-based devices of regulating the intensity for the light.

2. “A Novel TRIAC Dimming LAMP Driver by Variable Switched Capacitance for

Power Regulation” Eun S. Lee, Jun P. Cheon, Duy N. Tan, and Chun T. Rim Dept. of

Triac and diac based light intensity controller are very efficient than the
conventional light intensity regulators since it contains the proper control of voltage
regulation to be taken place across the connected lamp load. The incandescent lamp is
better option to show the desired varying light intensity since it has mush higher power
consumption comparing to the recent light emitting diode LED lamps so irt is hard to
show varying l9ight intensity via LEDS so incandescent lamp is better option here.

Circuit Diagram
Working

 light dimmers work by changing the duty cycle of the AC voltage which is applied to the lights being
controlled.
 the voltage is applied to half of the AC cycle, then the light bulb will appear with less intensity when it gets
the full AC voltage.
 The variable resistor plays as a main controller in the light dimmer circuit.
 In the circuit, variable resistor and DIAC are used to control the brightness of the lower level.
 To overcome the interface problem, Resistor & Capacitor are used.
 A bilateral DIAC is used to control the current flow to the TRIAC.
 Initially the capacitor is discharged, and during each half cycle of the input from the Potentiometer, the
capacitor is charged to its breakover voltage.
 When this occurs the DIAC begins to conduct and discharges the capacitor through the TRIAC gate. This
point in time is known as firing and it allows the voltage to be applied to the light bulb.
Future Scope

 The future scope of light intensity control using DIAC and TRIAC technology is
promising, with potential advancements and applications in various areas. Here are some
potential future developments and areas of interest:
 Energy Efficiency
 Wireless and IoT Integration
 Advanced Control Techniques
 Integration with Sustainable Energy Sources
conclusion

 Here we conclude that electronic dimmer are best choice over electrical dimmer ie.
Electrical components have more losses
 It is easy to show regulated light intensity via incandescent lamp due to its high power
consumption.
