OBSERVATION OF PRE-

SCHOOLERS

DEVELOPMENTAL MILESTONES

1. INFANCY(0-2 YEARS)
2. CHILDHOOD(2-12 YEARS)
3. ADOLESCENCE(13-18 YEARS)
4. ADULTHOOD(20-50 YEARS)
5. OLD AGE(65+ YEARS)
PRE-SCHOOLERS (2-6 YEARS)

• PRE SCHOOL IS THE STAGE OF LIFE WHERE INFANTS HAVE JUST


ENTERED CHILDHOOD AND HAVE STARTED GOING TO SCHOOL.
• THEY HAVE LEFT THEIR COMFORT ZONE FOR THE FIRST TIME AND MEET
THEIR PEERS OF THE SAME AGE GROUP.
• THEY ARE TRAINED DURING THE FOUR YEAR COURSE OF PRE SCHOOL.
• TRAINING INCLUDES LEARNING OF VERBAL SKILLS, FINE AND GROSS
MOTOR SKILLS, AND MANY MORE.
• THEY LEARN TO COMMUNICATE WITH TEACHERS AND ALSO LEARN TO
DISTINGUISH DIFFERENT COLOURS, SHAPES, LETTERS AND NUMBERS.
SENSORY MOTOR SKILLS

• OBSERVATION:
• ALMOST ALL PRE SCHOOLERS HAVE LEARNT TO SIT AND WALK.
• CHILDREN IN PLAY GROUP SEEMED TO STRUGGLE TO RUN AND
JUMP.
• FROM NURSERY, ALL THE SENSORY MOTOR SKILLS SEEMED TO
HAVE DEVELOPED IN EVERY CHILD.
SOCIO-EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT

• MOST PRE SCHOOLERS WERE ABLE TO GRASP NEW SHAPES


TAUGHT TO THEM AND WERE ABLE TO PRODUCE IT LATER.
• PLAY GROUPERS SPOKE GIBBERISH AND IN LOW VOICES WHEREAS
SOME BLABBERED AND SPOKE IN HIGH PITCHED SHRILLS.
• READING AND WRITING SKILLS SEEM TO DEVELOP AROUND 5
YEARS OF AGE WHERE KIDS ARE ABLE TO WRITE THEIR OWN
NAMES, IDENTIFIED WORDS, ETC.
• MOST KIDS FROM THE AGE OF 3 YEARS WERE ABLE TO
COMMUNICATE WITH THEIR ENVIRONMENT AND MAINTAIN EYE
CONTACT WITH THE PERSON SPEAKING TO THEM.
COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT

• OBJECT PERMANANCE WAS IN THE PROCESS OF DEVELOPING


WHEREAS IT HAD DEVELOPED ALREADY IN THE NURSERY KIDS.
• KIDS WERE ABLE TO IDENTIFY THE NEW SGAPES TAUGHT TO
THEM AFTER SOME INTERVAL OF TIME AS OBSERVED.
• MOST OF THE KIDS EXHIBIED EGOCENTRISM WHERE THEY GOT
INVOLVED ENTHUSIASTICALLY IN DISCUSSIONS AND GAVE
INSTANT REPLIES TO THE QUESTIONS ASKED TO THEM. 2-3 KIDS
UNDER OBSERVATION WERE SHY AND KEOT QUIET WHICH MEANT
THAT EGOCENTRISM WAS NOT SEEN IN THOSE KIDS.
MY REFLECTION

• THIS EDUCATIONAL EXPEDITION WAS MY FIRST PRACTICAL IN


PSYCHOLOGY WHICH ENABLED ME TO UNDERSTAND THE
CONCEPTS TAUGHT TO ME IN VIVID ASPECTS. IT ALLOWED ME TO
DIVE DEEPER INTO THE CONCEPT AND GET INVOLVED WITH THE
PRE SCHOOLERS.
• IT ALSO MADE ME A LITTLE MORE EXPRESSIVE AND I COULD
ASSESS THE DEVELOPMENTAL CHANGES IN DIFFERENT AGE
GROUPS.
• THIS INTERACTION TOOK ME BACK TO MY PRE SCHOOL DAYS AND
I ENJOYED THOROUGHLY WHILE PLAYING WITH THE LITTLE, CUTE
TODDLERS.
