RIZAL’S LIFE : EXILE, LIFE, TRIAL
Introduction
The film "Rizal sa Dapitan," directed by Tikoy
Aguiluz and released in 1997, thoughtfully
explores the life of Dr. Jose Rizal during his
exile in the town of Dapitan. This cinematic
piece effectively captures the essence of Rizal's
journey towards self-discovery, his meaningful
contributions to society, and the enduring
legacy he left behind. we will delve into the
film's themes, artistic execution, and its impact
on fostering awareness about the remarkable
life and achievements of this historical figure.

The opening scene of the movie shows
Rizal arriving in Dapitan, an isolated
seaside village in Mindanao, following his
exile by the Spanish government. At first,
Rizal is a bitter and frustrated man, but his
perspective quickly changes as he
recognizes that, even in exile, he can still
make a positive impact on society. We get
to see his kindness and commitment as he
makes a name for himself as a teacher,
doctor, and community leader via his
encounters with the locals.

After being exiled to Dapitan in 1892, José
Rizal started adjusting to his new surroundings.
In addition to treating his mother, Doña
Teodora Alonzo, who came to see him with his
sisters Maria and Narcisa , he also assisted the
locals by providing free education to all
youngsters and making friends with his pupil
Jose Asiniero.

When he first met Josephine Bracken, his
future wife, she brought her stepfather
George Taufer, who was blind to be healed
by Rizal. However, she later abandoned
him for her adored Rizal.

His exile in Dapitan was not marked by a
formal trial. Instead, it was part of the
Spanish government's efforts to remove
him from Manila due to his nationalist
activities and writings, which were critical
of Spanish colonial rule in the Philippines.

At the end of the story, Rizal was free, but
he asked to leave in Dapitan for another
month. To sold the land and get the dept of
the people in Dapitan, but because of his
siblings pursuing him to go aboard the ship
within the first arrival, he changed his
mind and set his clinic to fire.

The film closes with Rizal leaving Dapitan
as the locals mourn him. An epilogue
explains Rizal's intent to work in Cuba and
subsequent arrest, his execution and its
birthing the Philippine Revolution.
