Cleaning is the removal of dust, dirt, foreign matter,
tarnish, and stains from various surfaces with the aid
of certain cleaning agents and equipment. Dust, dirt,
and foreign Matter are together referred to as soil.
Soil such as sand, mud, pollutants, smoke, and fumes
is brought into the building from outside. Some soil,
such as fibers shed from the clothing and sewage is
generated by the occupants of the building.

When we say that a surface is soiled it means that
there is presence of dust, dirt, and foreign matter.
The ways in which soil can present itself are
numerous and each of these may require a specific
cleaning method or a blend of two or three methods
of cleaning described later in the chapter.
Understanding the nature of soiling is important so
as to select appropriate equipment and cleaning
agents.

The cleaning standards that can be set are
varied. Efficient cleaning results when certain
principles of cleaning are followed. These principles
have been listed down. The cleaning procedures
been grouped under manual and mechanical
methods. It will depend on the type of
establishment, the functions, and the use of the area.

Cleaning has been presented as a science as it has its
base in chemistry and to some extent in biology and
microbiology. To clean a surface, usually a combination
of two or more procedures is used. Cleaning however
efficient, will not show results unless the cleaning
frequency for various cleaning tasks is maintained. The
cleaning tasks are divided into daily, weekly, and
periodic tasks according to their frequency.

Guestroom cleaning is discussed in
much detail as it is the primary commodity
the hotel has to sell. The different styles of
bed making have been listed out and the most
prevalent method of making the bed has been
elaborated with the help of diagrams.

The daily cleaning of guestrooms with different
statuses has been explained. Now days, the term
cleaning in ‘daily cleaning of a guestroom’ has
been replaced by ‘servicing’ of guestrooms,
since it involves many other activities other than
the cleaning procedures.
