What do we mean by an academic

study?
Definition:
Academic writing is a formal style of writing that the majority of university students, teachers and
researchers are required to compose with it different styles of writing in their scholarly
publication(such as term papers, exam answers and essays). It is focused on evidence-based arguments
and logical reasoning to guide a reader’s understanding of a subject.
Types of academic writing(part 1/2):
Descriptive writing:
It is the simplest type of the academic writing, its
purpose is about giving information and facts
about an object. For example: Poems, novels and
articles.
Analytical writing:
This type includes the descriptive writing but it
requires to re-organize the information and facts
into categories or parts or relationships. The
analytical writing mostly used in discipline texts
(comparing two different things), for example:
theories, analyze results and magazines.
Types of academic writing(part 2/2):
Persuasive writing:
It has all the features of the analytical writing
(information and reorganize them) with the
addition of adding your own point of view. For
example: newspapers and political speeches.
Additional note: most essays and assignments are
persuasive, there is a persuasive element in at
least the discussion and conclusions.
Critical writing:
It also includes all the features of the persuasive
writing with the requirement of adding at least
two points of view including your own.
Additional note: this type of writing is commonly
used in postgraduate researchers and advanced
undergraduate writings.
Academic writing styles:
Academic writing is different from spoken language in terms of style. Those styles should
be:

3-Use academic language.

4-Practice writing regularly.

Components of academic writing:

In academic writing we have 5 components which are:

1)-Audience: considering your audience is something you should do before writing

your paper.
2)-Purpose: audience and purpose are interconnected.
3)-Organization: it is a matter of prioritizing and structures.
4)-Style: adding your touches to the work can improve it.
5)-Presentation: the way you present your work can make a different.
