INTRODUCTION Learning lexicons and lexical categories are fundamental factors that contribute to successful language
learning. These are linked to the vocabulary that are necessary for understanding and speaking a new language.
Language ability is to a large extent a function of vocabulary size (Alderson, 2005).
The Philippines is a country home to more than a hundred diverse languages which makes it an
interesting setting of language learning. The languages spoken by the Filipinos, coming from different cultures

and tribes, are mostly unknown to the rest of the world. However, the native speakers of these Philippine
languages, as well as some language enthusiasts, made use of the advantages offered by different social media
platforms in introducing their first languages to those who wanted to learn them as a second language, such as

Stephen Krashen. The theory is important because as early as the 1980s, it was influencing all
research into how a second language is acquired. According to Krashen, there are two second
language performance systems which are the acquired system and the learned system. In this
study, the learned system is related to the YouTube tutorial videos about the Bikol language.
