History
• The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) was
created on December 11, 1946, by the United Nations
(UN), to meet, in Europe and China, the emergency
needs of children during the post-war period.
• In 1950, the Fund's mandate was extended to serve
children and women in developing countries in long-
term projects. UNICEF became a permanent part of the
United Nations in 1953.
• When it was created in 1946, UNICEF was called the
United Nations International Children's Emergency
Fund. Upon becoming a permanent part of the UN, it
was renamed the United Nations Children's Fund;
however, the original acronym UNICEF was retained.
• UNICEF's main objective was to provide
assistance to millions of socially vulnerable
children in the post-World War II period in
Europe, China and the Middle East.
• Guided by the Convention on the Rights of the
Child, UNICEF is the world's leading advocate for
boys and girls.
