Physical ways of separating

mixtures.
Distillation
• Distillation, or classical
distillation, is the process of
separating the components or
substances from a liquid mixture
by using selective boiling and
condensation, usually inside an
apparatus known as a still.
Filtration
• Filtration is a physical
separation process that
separates solid matter and
fluid from a mixture using a
filter medium that has a
complex structure through
which only the fluid can pass
Evaporation
• Evaporation is a type of vaporization
that occurs on the surface of a liquid
as it changes into the gas phase. High
concentration of the evaporating
substance in the surrounding gas
significantly slows down evaporation,
such as when humidity affects rate of
evaporation of water
Chromatography
• In chemical analysis,
chromatography is a laboratory
technique for the separation of a
mixture into its components. The
mixture is dissolved in a fluid
solvent called the mobile phase,
which carries it through a system
on which a material called the
stationary phase is fixed
Decantation
• Decantation is a process
for the separation of
mixtures of immiscible
liquids or of a liquid and a
solid mixture such as a
suspension.
