Give five (5) and define methods in separating a solid-liquid mixtures.

Sedimentation is the process of separating an insoluble solid from a liquid in which it is suspended by
allowing it to settle to the bottom of the container.

Sedimentation is the method of sorting an insoluble solid from a liquid, it is suspended by allowing it to
settle to the bottom of the container

Evaporation can be used as a separation method to separate components of a

mixture with a dissolved solid in a liquid.  The liquid is evaporated, meaning it is
converted from its liquid state to gaseous state.  This often requires heat.  Once the
liquid is completely evaporated, the solid is all that is left behind.
Evaporation is the separation procedure that can be used to separate the
components of a mixture with a dissolved solid in a liquid.

Distillation is a separation technique used to separate components of a liquid mixture by a

process of heating and cooling, which exploits the differences in the volatility of each of the
components

Distillation is a process of separating components of a liquid mixture through the process of

heating and cooling that takes the variations in each component’s volatility.

Filtration is a method of separating the components of a mixture that contains

an undissolved solid in a liquid. It can be done cold or hot, with or without
suction, and with or without a Buchner or Hirsch funnel or a plain glass funnel.
Chromatography remains the most important method for the separation of mixtures
into its components. It is quite versatile for it can be used to separate mixtures of
solids, or of liquids, or mixtures of solids and liquids combined, or in the case of gas
chromatography, can separate mixtures of gases.
Chromatography – it is the most used process for separating mixtures. It is
somewhat versatile, since it may be used to separate mixtures of solids, liquids, or
solids and liquids together, as well as separate mixtures of gases in the case of gas
chromatography.

2. Define the following terms;

a. Precipitation- it is the any liquid or solid water that develops in the atmosphere and falls back to the
Earth.
Precipitation is any liquid or frozen water that forms in the atmosphere and falls back to the
Earth. It comes in many forms, like rain, sleet, and snow.

b. Precipitate- it is the formation of an insoluble compound through reacting two salts or altering the
temperature of a molecule to influence its solubility. The solid that forms as a result of a precipitation
process is also known as "precipitate."

In chemistry, to precipitate is to form an insoluble compound either by reacting

two salts or by changing the temperature to affect the solubility of the compound.
Also, "precipitate" is the name given to the solid that is formed as a result of a
precipitation reaction.

c. Filtration- it is a method of dissociating insoluble solids from a liquid.

Filtration is used for separating.

d. Filtrate- it is the liquid that has undergone through the filtration process.

Filtrate refers to liquid which has passed through the process of filtration.

e. Decantation- it is the method of separating mixtures through eliminating a liquid layer or solids
precipitated from a solution.

Decantation is a process to separate mixtures by removing a liquid layer that is

free of a precipitate, or the solids deposited from a solution.

f. Residue is a substance that stays on a surface or in a container after a chemical procedure and is
difficult to remove.

a substance that remains on a surface, in a container etc and cannot be removed easily, or that

remains after a chemical process

3. Give three (3) examples of application of heating in a water bath

Application of Water Bath

 Used for incubation of cell culture.
 Water Bath also utilized as a heat source for flammable chemicals.
 It is used to facilitates chemical reactions.
 Used to heat up chemical reagents.
 Used for the melting of some substance.
 It is used to increase the solubility of some insoluble substances.
