Evaluating

Algebraic Expression
To evaluate an algebraic
expression means to replace
a variable by a particular
value and to simplify the
expression.
We evaluate expression
by substituting the value for
the variable and finding the
value of expression.
Example:

1. Evaluate x + 3 if x = {4, 5}

Solution. Replace the variable by

the given number.
If x = 4, then

x+3= 4+3
=7
If x = 5, then

x+3= 5+3
=8
2. Evaluate 2x + 5x if x = 2
2x + 5x = 2(2) + 5(2)
= 4 + 10
= 14
3. Evaluate xy – 5
if x = 6 and y = 4
= (6)(4) – 5
= 24 – 5
= 19
4. Evaluate 4 10 if x = 3
= 4(
= 4(9) – 10
= 36 – 10
= 26
5. Evaluate if x = 2
2x

6. 2 - 5x + 4 if x = -3
Practice!
Let x = 4. Evaluate the algebraic
expression.
1. 4. -
2. (- 5. - 8x
3. 3 + 4x
Complete each table. Show your
solution.
1. x -2 -1 0 1 2
8x
2.
m 8 10 12 -8 -10

5(m – 8)
3.
x -3 -2 -1 0 1
y 2 1 0 -1 -2
5 - 3y
