What is Typographic Hierarchy?

Typographic hierarchy refers
to presenting the content in
a way that visually conveys
where to look, and in what
sequence. The styling and
placement of all elements –
both type and images –
should guide the viewer
through the content in order
of importance.

What is Typographic Hierarchy?

As a general rule, every
design should include at
least three levels of
hierarchy:
1. Headline or Heading
2. Subheads and
3. Body Text

Example of Typographic Hierarchy

Designing with type often begins with unformatted text (left). Once the hierarchy
of content is determined (usually by the designer, see above right), typestyles are
chosen; type sizes can be modified; and position – both in terms of text alignment
and line spacing – start to be adjusted to separate the various elements. Then,
weights and type sizes are fine tuned to reinforce the hierarchy.

What is Typographic Contrast?

Typographic contrast refers to the
grouping of two typographical
elements, then using different
methods of traditional design to
create contrast. The contrast
places emphasis on the important
element of type, letting the
secondary element command
less attention.
The goal is clear communication
with the audience.

What is Typographic Contrast?

Typographic contrast makes text interesting and can help you
communicate which ideas you want to emphasize. Varying size,
typeface, weight, color, and style can give your designs more impact, as
well as making the content better organized. If we look at traditional
forms of contrast, we can achieve typographical contrast by:

1. Size
2. Space
3. Colour
