DEFINITION OF EVAPORATION

• Evaporation is defined as the change from liquid to gas without boiling and it occurs below its
boiling point. Evaporation only takes place at the surface of a liquid very slowly. It also produces
a cooling effect because energy is absorbed from the surroundings
• When water is heated it evaporates because the molecules of the liquid get energy in the form of
heat. The molecules then move and vibrate so quickly that they escape into the atmosphere as
molecules of water vapour.

USING EVAPORATION AS A SEPARATION
TECHNIQUE
Evaporation is used to separate mixtures: specifically a soluble solid from
a liquid.
Picture beside this demonstrates the
set-up used to separate solutions.
We can use copper sulfate mixed in
with water as an example. To
separate the two substances, The

and heat the solution. This would Insert or Drag & Drop your photo
cause the water to evaporate and the
water would turn into vapour, as
solid particles of copper sulfate
would begin to form. Eventually, the
water would disappear and only
solid copper sulfate remain.
