Lesson 8: Slope of a Line
Objectives:
Illustratesand finds the slope of a line given two
points, equation, and graph.
Slope of a Line

For any two points on the line, and

the slope is given by the formula:

where
Lines with zero slopes
are horizontal.

Lines with positive slopes rise

from left to right.

Lines with negative slopes fall

from left to right.

Lines with undefined

slopes (no slope) are
vertical.
Example 1
Find the slope of a line passing through
the given pair of points
and
𝑨 ( 𝟒 ,𝟏 ) 𝑩(𝟖 , 𝟔)
𝒙𝟏, 𝒚𝟏 𝒙𝟐 , 𝒚 𝟐
Example 2
Find the slope of a line passing through
the given pair of points
and
𝑪 ( 𝟓 , −𝟏 ) 𝑫 (−𝟐 , 𝟑)
𝒙𝟏, 𝒚𝟏 𝒙𝟐 , 𝒚 𝟐
Example 3

Find the slope of the line with equation

Take any two distinct points on the line,

then compute its slope using these points.
Remember that any point on the line with
the equation has the coordinates of the
form . Let us consider the points and and
determine the slope of the line containing
these points.

𝒙𝟐 − 𝒙 𝟐 −𝟓 −𝟑 −𝟖
Example 4

Find the slope of the line with equation x

= −5.

Take any two distinct points on the line,

then compute its slope using these points.
Remember that any point on the line with
the equation
𝑦 = −5 has the coordinates of the form (−5,
𝑦). Let us consider the points (−5, 3) and
(−5, −2) and compute the slope of the line
determined by these points.
