Hazard – Potential to cause harm


 Hazard: A danger, usually in the form of energy
(unsafe behavior or condition) which has the
potential to lead to an incident or accident.
 Eg: Mechanical - Unguarded machinery
 Electrical - Damaged electrical cable
 Physical - Working at height with out

What is an accident / Incident and Near Miss

 Accident/ Incident: is an unplanned, unexpected &


undesired event that results in personal injury or
damage to property / environment or third party(ies).
 Near-Miss: is an incident which potentially could have
caused injury or occupational illness and/or
damage(loss) to people, assets the environment,third
party or reputation.
 Note: Near Misses must be reported as valuable
lessons can be learnt from them to prevent
reoccurrence which otherwise may lead to real
injury and/or damage(loss).

Accident -Near-Miss Relationship


 Initial studies show for each disabling injury, there were 29 minor
injuries and 300 Near-miss incidents/no injury.
 Recent studies indicate for each serious result there are 59 minor
and 600 near-misses.

Reporting of Accidents- Worker’s Role

 Report ALL occupational injuries and


illnesses to your supervisor / HSE dept.
 Get prompt first-aid / medical attention.
 Cooperate with the investigation team.
 Report all NEAR-MISS/ NEAR-HIT
incidents without fail. They are warnings
and provide opportunity to prevent
injuries.

Reporting and investigation of Accidents – Supervisor’s Role

 All accidents/ Incidents including Near-


misses shall be reported, recorded and
investigated as per IVRCL’s Investigation
Report Form
 The concerned supervisor/ Engineer shall
* Report the incident immediately to the
Construction Manager and HSE dept.
* Submit preliminary report within 2 hrs to
HSE dept.

Supervisor’s Responsibilities towards Safety
 Supervisors have direct responsibility to take care of Safety of their
workers
 Supervisors shall Conduct TOOLBOX meetings prior to start of work

 He shall be present at work site through out the duration of work.

 Conduct HSE inspections, rectify unsafe conditions and actions in his

work area.
 Maintain good house keeping

 Encourage workers to report unsafe acts and conditions and NEAR

MISS cases. Take appropriate corrective and preventive actions


 Set as a good example for others.

Excavation Safety

Why Are Trenches Dangerous?


A trench is an excavation deeper than
it is wide.
 Trenches Can Kill
 Workers can be buried alive
 Cave-ins can result from stresses in

walls, nearby moving vehicles and


equipment, or spoil piles
 Water can collect in the bottom
 Flammable/toxic gases can build up
 Gas from nearby sewer or gas lines

can seep into trench

 Common Threats Associated With Poor Housekeeping:
 Slips/Trips, due to untidy workplaces;
 Struck by falling materials, due to improper stacking;
 Strike Against Stationary Object, due to insufficient workspaces;
 Falls into floor openings, etc.;
 Improper Access – Emergency Situations;
 Impalement/Piercing/Puncture, due to sharp
objects, nails, rebars;
 Fire, due to oil and fuel leaks;

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT
 SAFE WORK PRACTICES:
 Use the right tool for the job.
 Don’t use a screwdriver instead of a pry bar or pliers

instead of a wrench.
 Store tools safely.
 Don’t leave tools where they could fall on someone or

where an exposed sharp edge could come in contact


with an exposed body.
 Inspect tools before use.
 Dull saws

 Screwdrivers with broken tips or handles

 Use tools correctly and with common sense.


 Don’t pull a knife toward you or use a screwdriver on

something you’re holding in your hand.

Vehicle Safety
 Maintain all the vehicles in good order. Conduct daily checks to
ascertain healthy condition.
 Observe stipulated speed limits and traffic rules.
 License holders only shall drive
 All passengers shall use safety belt
 Don’t over load
 Carry shovel, wooden plank/ rubber sheets, screw jack, nylon flat
belt and shackle, fire extinguisher, spare tyre, hazard triangle,
sufficient water and food.

PERMIT TO WORK
 A working permit, the permission to perform work in a construction
or an operating area, assures us, upon approval that it is safe to
perform work in that specific location. It consists of the site
preparation requirements, necessary signatures.

 A tool used to assist in:


 Determining the job safety requirements for a

specific job
 Establishing site specific precautions

 Authorizing work

 Communicating the requirements to the

personnel
 involved, and

 Monitoring the safety conditions

Waste Management
 Waste has to be handled to minimize the harm to
human health and environment.
 Sequence of Waste Management Process-Collection,
Segregation, Temporary Storage and Final Disposal.
 Final disposal may include Recycling, Recovery, Reuse
and Land filling.

Types of Wastes

 Hazardous wastes : Waste which is toxic and have got


direct bearing on health and surroundings
 Non –Hazardous : Waste mainly municipal/ domestic in
nature such as paper, packaging plastics etc
 Medical Waste : Waste from medical facilities such as
needle, dressings etc
 Inert waste : non biodegradable and non reactive waste
e.g. stones, glass etc
 Organic Waste : Include food waste.

Pollution Prevention
 Aim is to avoid and minimize the pollution due

to project activities.
 Report any pollution incidence and take

corrective action.
 Prevent any spill of chemicals including oil onto

ground and water during activities.

Protection against Heat rashes/ Heat stress

 Consume plenty of water to prevent


dehydration
 Eat less and drink more
 Have adequate rest (Sleep for at least 6 hrs)
 Avoid tea/ coffee. Instead have plenty of fruits
and juices
 Wear cotton clothing and head wear (Helmet,
cap etc)

GENERAL PPE REQUIREMENTS
 The use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is dependent upon
the hazards present in your work area
 Hard hats – Overhead and falling hazards
 Safety glasses – Flying particles
 Gloves – Protection from sharp objects and chemicals
 Ear plugs – Protection against hearing loss
 Harness – Protection from falling
 Steel toe shoes – Protection against foot injures
 All employees are responsible for inspecting, cleaning, and
maintaining their PPE.

First – aid facilities

 Sub-contractors/contractor to establish First-


aid facilities as per Govt. labor law
 Qualified and Trained first-aid attendants shall
be available at site.
 Make sure at least one vehicle is available at
site for use in case of any emergency.
 First-aid kits with medicines as stipulated in
Govt. labor law. To be Inspected and maintained
as per schedule.
