4.1 General
1.0 PURPOSE
The purpose of this procedure is to ensure that suitable personal protective equipment is
available to protect any employee from any hazard that could cause injury or ill health on a
construction site.
It is essential that employees wear suitable protective clothing/equipment (PPE) provided
and keep them in a clean and safe condition.

3.0 RESPONSIBILITIES
Employees:
- wearing the appropriate personal protective equipment for the work in hand;
- ensuring that their personal issue protective clothing is maintained in a clean and
serviceable condition;
- reporting any defects to their superior;
4.0 PROCEDURE
4.1 General
Safety at work takes many forms, among which are safe working practices, the guarding of
machinery, a safe working environment and the protection of work places and people in them. company
is very conscious of the importance of all these, and one of the ways in which it demonstrates this is in
the provision of personal protective equipment, required for the various tasks.
Safety glasses/eye protectors conforming to approved standards shall be worn at all times in
areas where appropriate and/or when specified as designated eye protection areas. The
following activities will require the wearing of eye protection:
- Any operation ( hammering, chipping etc) connected with grinding.
- When using fluids (irritating or caustic chemicals) or molten metal’s.
- Welding / cutting, by the operators and assistants / observers.
- Any operation (hammering, chipping etc.) connected with materials that may fracture or
chip e.g. glass, concrete, rock, scale etc.
- When using cutting or power tool machines where flying particles may be produced by
their operation.
Glasses will give some protection against impact to the eyes but goggles or other fully
enclosed protection devices should be considered where air borne particles or dust may be
present.
Prescription lenses safety spectacles are available for personnel working in designated eye
protection areas. Visitors who wear glasses and who enter any designated eye protection areas
shall be required to wear eye shields over their glasses.
Gloves suitable for the type of work to be carried out shall be worn where a possibility of
hand injuries exists from handling of corrosive or poisonous substances, cuts or abrasions or
from heat, cold, fire or electric shock.
Safety Boots:
Safety boots (or safety shoes if practicable) must be worn on site and at all areas other
than in office / accommodation buildings. They minimise the risk of injury from slipping, damage
to the foot from heavy objects, corrosive substances and in some cases insulate against electric
shock.
