MEMBRANE

WHAT IS A CELL SURFACE
MEMBRANE ? also known as the plasma
The cell surface membrane,
membrane, is a vital structure in all living cells, as it
separates the cell from its external environment and
regulates the movement of materials in and out of the
cell.

Fat-soluble molecules, such as oxygen, can pass

through the membrane, while big, water-soluble
molecules, such as sugar, and electrically charged
ions, such as calcium, are repelled by the fatty-acid
chains.

They are made up if lipids.

WHAT ARE THE ROLES OF THE
CELL SURFACE MEMBRANE ?
1. Regulating the movement of substances: The cell membrane controls the
movement of ions, nutrients, waste products, and other molecules in and
out of the cell.

2. Maintaining cell shape and structure: The membrane provides structural

support to the cell and helps to maintain its shape.

3. Cell communication: The membrane contains receptors that allow cells

to communicate with each other and with the environment.

4. Protection: The membrane acts as a barrier, protecting the cell from

harmful substances in the environment.

5. Energy production: The membrane contains enzymes and proteins that

are involved in energy production processes such as cellular respiration

and photosynthesis.
Carrier proteins
Carrier proteins are involved in the facilitated diffusion or
active transport of molecules across the cell membrane. They

01 bind to specific molecules and change their conformation to

move them across the membrane. Examples of carrier proteins
include glucose transporters, which move glucose into cells for
energy production.

3 Types of Carrier proteins

1.Uniporter

2.Symporter
01
3.Antiporter
SLIDESMANIA
Uniporter
membrane transport protein that moves only one
kind of molecule

01
SLIDESMANIA
Symporter
proteins that simultaneously transport two molecules across a
membrane in the same direction

01
SLIDESMANIA
Antiporter
A membrane protein that transports two molecules at the same time in
the opposite direction.

Channel proteins
Channel proteins form pores in the membrane that allow the
passive diffusion of ions or small molecules across the

02 membrane. Examples of channel proteins include ion channels

that allow the movement of sodium, potassium, and calcium
ions across the membrane.

Cell surface receptors
Cell surface receptors are proteins that bind to specific signaling

03
molecules, such as hormones or neurotransmitters, on the
outside of the cell membrane. This binding triggers a cascade of
cellular responses, such as changes in gene expression or
activation of enzymes.

Cell surface antigens
Cell surface antigens are markers on the surface of cells that
allow the immune system to distinguish between self and non-

04 self cells. They play a critical role in the recognition and

elimination of foreign cells and pathogens by the immune
system.
