SIMPLY SUPPORTED BEAMS

Example 1: A simply supported beam AB of span 5 m is located as shown in Fig.

Find the reactions at A and B.

2m 1m 1m
RA 5m RB

ABK WISDOM 2
SIMPLY SUPPORTED BEAMS

(i) Consider the F.B.D. of Beam AB

(iv) Check,
Action = Reaction
Ʃ Fy = RA + RB
C D E 3 + 4 + 5 = 4.40 + 7.60
12 kN = 12 kN
2m 1m 1m

RA = 4.40 kN 5m RB = 7.60 kN
3m
4m

(ii) Ʃ MA = 0 (iii) Ʃ Fy = 0

+ (3 x 2) + (4 x 3) + (5 x 4) − (RB x 5) = 0 RA + RB − 3 − 4 − 5 = 0

RA + 7.60 − 3 − 4 − 5 = 0
RB = 38 / 5 = 7.60 kN
RA = 4.40 kN

Example 2: A simply supported beam AB of span 6 m is located as shown in Fig.

Determine the reactions RA and RB of the beam.

(i) Consider the F.B.D. of Beam AB

3 kN

4.5 m

(iv) Check,
2.25 m Action = Reaction
6m
Ʃ Fy = RA + RB
F.B.D. of Beam AB 4 + 3 + 1.5 = 5.25 + 3.25
8.50 kN = 8.50 kN

(ii) Ʃ MA = 0 (iii) Ʃ Fy = 0
+ (4 x 1.5) + (3 x 2.25) + (1.5 x 4.5) − (RB x 6) = 0
RA + RB − 4 − 3 − 1.5 = 0

RB = 19.50 / 6 = 3.25 kN RA + 3.25 − 4 − 3 − 1.5 = 0

RA = 5.25 kN
