MEDIA LITERACY ?

Media literacy is the ability to shift through and analyze the messages that
inform, entertain and sell to us every day. It is the ability to bring critical
thinking skills to bear on all media-from videos and web environments to
product placements in films and virtual displays on bill boards.

The core components of being MEDIA LITERATE :


• Media messages are constructed.

• Messages are created differently from different


media, keeping in mind the characteristics and
strengths of each medium.

• Media messages are created for a particular


purpose.
WHAT WILL YOU KEEP IN MIND WHILE
ANALYZING A NEWSPAPER ?

Language
The language of the newspaper should be simple, easy to understand . There
should be no use of ornamental words which is not easy to understand. The
sentences should be written in present tens.
Way of writing
The INVERTED PYRAMID is a metaphor used by journalists and other writers
to illustrate how information should be prioritized and structured in text. It is up-
side-down pyramid .

• The widest part at the top represents the most newsworthy info ; that is
WHAT, WHEN, WHY, WHERE, WHO AND HOW.
• Then comes the body; the crucial info.
• Lastly the tail; other general info. Which is least important.

CONVERGENCE ? EXPLAIN ?
Media convergence is the merging of mass communication outlets – print,
television, radio, the Internet along with portable and interactive technologies
through various digital media platforms. Media convergence is the blending of
multiple media forms into one platform for purposes of delivering a dynamic
experience.
NEED FOR MEDIA CONVERGENCE

• Technologically rich societies have entered the digital age.


• Media industries are grappling with new opportunities.
• Media people tend to get very excited about convergence,
because it holds so much promise.
• The melding together of different media, incorporating new
personalized services in both impressive and overwhelming.
WHY DO WE NEED TO KNOW THE OWNERSHIP
STRUCTURE OF ANY MEDIA ?

There are many media organisations in the country that are owned and
controlled by a wide variety of entities including corporate bodies, societies and
trusts, and individuals. Information about such organisations and people is
scattered, incomplete, and dated, thereby making it rather difficult to collate
such information leave alone analyse it.
Understanding media ownership, becomes one of the key aspects of media
literacy. We often judge news credibility by looking at various news channels
but we don’t know that various news channels can come under one owner :

• Times of India, Economics Times, Navbharat Times, Mirror, Crest,


Zoom, Times Now, Radio Mirchi are all under the same broad
ownership.
• Zee TV, Zee Regional, Zee News, Siticable, Dish TV, DNA are all under
the same broad owenership. Furthermore, the company also producers
film.
WHAT IS THE IMPACT OF INTERNET ON
TRADITIONAL MEDIA ?

• Traditional media has come to a dying stage :


Traditional media strategies, like print ads, billboards, newspaper
advertorials, television and radio, and direct mail were used before,
but due the the rise of Internet , the traditional media of exchanging
or imparting information is dying.

• Amalgamation of traditional media into new media :

Yes it is true that due to the rise of internet today. Every medium
has come together and are merged with the Internet . Although
publishing and printing of newspaper has stopped, but now online

ANY COMMUNITY RADIO STATION ?

Community radio usually is a short-range, not-for-profit radio


station or channel that caters for the information needs of people
living in a particular locality, in the languages and formats that
are most adapted to the local context. Community radio stations

WHO IS CONSIDERED AS FATHER OF THE INTERNET ?

of $5.25 million.
