Volume and Projection

During face-to-face interactions, like when you deal with your classmates and
teachers, you use your voice to convey messages. This makes your voice a very
important communication tool.

1. Volume – refers to the intensity of the sound produced by the speaker.

The highness or lowness of the voice is called pitch.
How soft or loud your voice depends on three factors:
 The distance between you (the speaker) and your listener.
 The space where you are having the conversation.
 The medium (own voice or using microphone)
2. Projection – refers to the voice’s strength or ‘carrying power’ that is how much
voice you have and how far it you carries. Good voice projection requires:
 Proper breathing
 Good posture
 Control of the volume of the voice
Remember the following in projecting your voice:
1.Do not make your voice loud when talking to only one person or
a small group.
2.If you notice that your listeners are uncomfortable with your loud
voice, soften it.
3.On the contrary, if you see your listeners trying hard to listen to
you, you should make your voice a little louder to make it easier
for them to understand what you are saying.
4.If you are talking about something serious or confidential, do not
raise your voice.
5.Even when you feel tense, irritated, or angry, avoid raising your
voice or shouting in order to solve the problem peacefully
