Appreciate the differences in the concepts of Creativity,
Invention and Innovation

Discuss some case studies on the concepts

Creativity
Creativity “refers to both the process of idea generation
or problem solving, and the actual idea or solution
(Amabile, 1983; Sternberg, 1988a; Weisberg, 1988)

“Researchers and laypersons seem to agree that creativity

refers to something that is both novel and in some sense
valuable” (Ford, 1996, p. 1114).
Creativity
Creativity is a process, rather than an outcome
(Drazin, Glynn, and Kazanjian (1999)

Organizational creativity is “the creation of a valuable,

useful new product, service, idea, procedure, or process
by individuals working together in a complex social
system” (Woodman, et al, 1993, p. 293).
Creativity
Employee creativity refers to the production of ideas,
products, or procedures that are:

(1) Novel or original and

(2) Potentially useful to the employing organization

(Amabile, 1996)” (Madjar, Oldham & Pratt, 2002, p. 767).

Characteristics of Creativity
1. Process focused
2. Outcome focused
3. Novelty/originality
4. Value
5. Useful
6. New product, service, idea, procedure, or process
Innovation
• A change in the process by which an organization transforms labour,
capital, materials and information into products and services of greater
value. (Christensen et al., 2019)

• Doing something new as an idea, product, service, market or technology in a

new or established organization (Gartner, 1990, p.25).
Not all Innovations are created equal

• Market creating innovation: transforms complex and expensive

products and services into simple and more affordable product to
facilitate accessibility to non-consumers

• Benefits: Jobs, profits, culture

(Christensen et al., 2019)

Not all Innovations are created equal

• Sustainable innovations: Improvements to existing solutions on the

market

• Benefits: Competitiveness, using existing channels

(Christensen et al., 2019)

Not all Innovations are created equal

• Efficiency innovations: Doing more with fewer resources. Focuses

on the how…process innovations

• Advantages/disadvantages?

(Christensen et al., 2019)
