Lesson 6:

COMBINED
VARIATION
LEARNING OUTCOMES:

Define combined variation.

Solve and translates into combined

variation statement a relationship
between two quantities given a
mathematical equation and vice
versa.
COMBINED VARIATION

• Combined variation is the kind of

variation that involves both direct
variation and inverse variation.
• Putting together joint variation and
inverse variation is also a kind of
combined variation.
Examples:
Translate the statement into a
mathematical equation. Use k as the
constant variation

1. T varies directly as a and inversely

as b.

Answer: T =
2. The acceleration (A) of a moving
object varies directly as the distance
(d) it travels and inversely as the
square of the time (t) it travels.

Answer: A =
3. a varies jointly as b and c and
inversely as d.

Answer: A =
4. The number of days (d) needed to
paint a wall varies directly as the
square of width (w) of the wall and
the pail (p) paints needed and varies
inversely as the square root of
number of people (n) painting.

Answer: d =
Let us now solve!

EXAMPLE:
Find the equation of variation and solve for the value of the constant of
variation of k, then find the missing value.

1. a varies directly as b and inversely as c. If a = 9 when b

= 6 and c = 2, find a when b = 8 and c = 12.

Solution: Equation of Variation :

a= a=
9 = Solving for a:
9 = 3k a=
a=
k=3 a=2
2. x varies directly as y and inversely as square root of z. If
x = 4 when y = 24 and z = 9, find x when y = 16 and z = 16.

Solution: Equation of Variation : Solving for x:

x= x= x=
4= x=
4= x=
4 = 8k x=
x=2
k=
3. y varies directly as x and inversely as z. If y = 45 when x
= 10 and z = 2, find x when y = 21 and z = 3.

Solution: Equation of Variation:

y= y=
45 = Solving for x:
45 = 5k 21 =
21 = 3x
k=9 =
x=7
4. a varies jointly as b and c and inversely as d. If a = 36
when b = 8 and c = 6 and d = 4, find a when b = 5 and c = 3
and d = 9.

Solution: Equation of Variation :

a= a=
36 = Solving for d:
36 = a=
36 = 12k a=
= a=5
k=3
5. a varies jointly as b and c and inversely as d. If a = 30 when b
= 3 and c = 4 and d = 2, find d when a = 5 and b = 10 and c = 1.

Solution: Equation of Variation :

a= a=
30 = Solving for d:
30 = 5=
30 = 6k 5=
= 5d = 50
k=5 =
d = 10
ASSIGNMENT
Solve the following.

1. p varies jointly as q and the square of r and inversely as

s.
a.) Write the equation of the relation.
b.) Find k if p = 40 when q =5, r = 4 and s = 6
c.) Find p when q = 3, r = 16 and s = 9.
d.) Find s and p = 10, q = 2 and r = 49

2. d varies jointly as c and b and inversely as a. If d = 120

when c = 12 and b = 5 and a = 10, find c when d = 30 and
b = 9 and a = 18.
