Purpose
The purpose of using a Gin Wheel during
construction is to eliminate the risks due to manual
handling of parts of scaffolds specially when human
chain is being applied.
REQUIREMENTS
 Work Permit
 Main Work Permit
 Scaffold Permit
 Supplementary Permit ( i.e elevated work permit..)
 NO PERMIT, NO WORK
 PPE
 Eye protection
 Helmet with head strap
 Leather Glove (scaffold)
 Safety Shoes
 Cover all with reflectorized( visible)
 Full body Harness – 1.8 meter
REQUIREMENTS
 Training
 No Training, No work!

 Barricade and Signage

 Less than 24 hours Soft barricade
 More than 24 hours HARD BARRICADE (Midrail and Top Rail
and drop bar)
 20 Kilos allowed “Sign Board”
 Awareness Signboard “ KEEP AWAY Ginwheel activity is
in progress & No Unauthorized Entry)
 CROSSING BARRICADE IS ZERO TOLERANCE
REQUIREMENTS
 Inspection
 Shall be inspected by Scaffolding Inspector prior each use and
monthly.
 Before Installation, Pre-use inspection, Weekly Inspection and
Monthly Inspection
REQUIREMENTS
 Operator Shed
INSTALLATION OF GINWHEEL

A ring-type gin wheel is preferable.

If a hook-type gin wheel is used, it shall not
be hooked through a coupler; but, it shall be
lashed to the supporting tube and the hook
moused. In either case, the gin wheel fixing
to the tube shall be prevented from slipping
toward or away from the scaffold by one
coupler mounted on either side of the fixing.
See Figure I.
INSTALLATION OF GINWHEEL
• Materials to be raised shall be firmly attached to the gin wheel rope
and shall not exceed 20kg.
• Frequently check the tightening of the clamp and gin wheel screws.
• Assemble the support at a height from the working floor suitable for
the best working conditions of the operator who must receive the
loads and make the rope descent to ground.
• Before starting operating with gin wheel, check that the supporting
pipe is correctly installed and the scaffold on which the support is
fixed is strong and stiff enough.
• The gin wheel position must be at allocation that is clear of
obstructive tubes or projecting cornices etc.
• Remind that gin wheel must be oriented, for a good functioning, at a
right angle to the supporting pipe during lifting and lowering of loads.
RADIUS
OPERATOR SHED
• All gin wheels that are installed in 8
meters elevation and above shall have
an operator shed for the gin wheel
operator.
• The roof shall be made of scaffolding
planks to serve as shield from falling
materials.
• For the best safety of the operator at
ground, he shall always be inside the
operator shed during the loads
handling.
• The worker who ties the load shall
immediately go to the operator shed
after securing the load.
MATERIAL HOISTING
• Only authorized personnel shall be allowed to use Gin Wheel.
• Always lift loads adequate to the physical capacity of the operator,
also related to the lifting height.
• Put the due attention to the fastening of the load onto the rope:
danger of load fall.
• No hooks shall be used to tie or lift material using gin wheel.
• All scaffolding materials must be raised or lowered using proprietary
scaffolding bags.
• Only one board or one pipe of any length may be raised or lowered
at any one time and suitably secured using a double wrap hitch, with
the knot positioned at the top and at the bottom part of the material
to be hoisted.
MATERIAL HOISTING
• Always wear leather safety gloves while pulling and raising the rope
attached to the gin wheel.
• All workers positioned on the scaffold and either receiving or
lowering materials, must be protected by a double guard rail and
maintain 100% Tie-Off at all times.
• All Gin Wheel operation shall be stop when wind velocities are
above 32 km/h (20 mph).
• Materials shall be erected or used as soon as possible when it
reaches at elevated level and not to be stored in the platform. When
the material already reaches to the desired level, the worker who
receives the material shall untie the rope inside the platform.
GIN WHEEL AND ROPE REQUIREMENT

• Each Gin Wheel shall be marked with unique serial number for
inspection and tracking purpose.
• The safe working load is the maximum load which the equipment should
be used; this load should never be exceeded.
• Before use, all gin wheels and ropes should be subjected to a proof load
test by the manufacturer and certified. The safe working load and serial
number shall be clearly marked, either by tagging, stamping, engraving,
or embossing.
• Gin wheel ropes shall be of the correct size to suit the gin wheel, usually
18-mm (3/4-inch).
GIN WHEEL AND ROPE REQUIREMENT
• Do not lift suddenly or stopped abruptly the hoist to avoid shock loading.
This can be caused by the sudden stop, the jerking of the load by poor
operation, or the rope slipping on the load. A shock load can increase
the normal working load by as much as five times its value.
• Do not use ropes of diameters different from the ones suitable with the
gin wheel.
• Do not use ropes with the diameter reduced by wear below the
minimum diameter indicated nor with strands deformed or damaged.
