Visual Assessment

 s.Oliver standard cabinet for visual color assessment is VeriVide CAC 60

 The primary light source is D65, F11 (TL84) is the secondary light source for all
visual and instrumental assessments at s.Oliver Group

 Samples for visual assessments must be balanced to ambient room conditions

prior making the assessment.

 The observer should allow a minimum of 10 seconds of adaptation to the

illumination in the lighting cabinet.

 When changing from D65 to F11 the observer should allow a minimum of 10 seconds
before assessment is made.
 s.Oliver color standard and the sample must be aligned in the same direction
considering weave, knit pattern or other textures

A. Schödel –3–
Visual Assessment

 When viewing a sample with naps (like corduroy or velvet) always do this with
the nap in a downward direction

 For the matching to be acceptable, it must be visually acceptable and within the
DE tolerance (specified under chapter 4.5 or 7.2.5) for all specified illuminants.

 Final decisions regarding color quality are to be made under D65 illumination.

 Submissions, which do not meet the tolerances specified under both primary
and secondary illuminants or exhibit signs of metamerism, must be rejected.

 We fully expect visual and instrumental assessments to be in close agreement,

however in some borderline cases s. Oliver will determine acceptability by visual
assessment.

Digital Assessment
Requirements for Spectrophotometer

Instrumental assessment within the s.Oliver Group is performed by using

Datacolor Spectraflash 600 Plus Close Tolerances spectrophotometer. In
order to ensure accordance, the following configuration must be strictly used!

Wavelength Interval 10 nm
Sphere geometry

Close tolerance Inter Instruments Agreement: average: 0,08

instruments de (CIELab) based on BCRA tiles

Optical Configuration d/8°; SCE

UV calibration
Aperture plate LAV
Maintenance must be conducted every year
The instrument should be located in a clean and conditioned environment
with a constant temperature of 20°C +/- 2°C and a constant relative humidity
of 65% +/- 2%.

Condition for Measurement

The s.Oliver color measurement conditions are:

Specular excluded (SCE)

The Large Area View (LAV: d=30mm) should be used for averaging the
sample
The instrument should be calibrated every 8 hours.
The sample should be correctly conditioned at the standard temperature
of 20°C and at the standard relative humidity of 65%. The conditioning
time has to be 30 minutes at least.

Sample Positioning / Presentation in General

The sample must be smooth and without creases and the commercial face must
always be measured – the sample should not protrude into the measuring
sphere of the spectrophotometer.
In order to take unleveled dyeing into account, the sample has to be removed
from the instrument and refolded before additional readings.

 Choose samples that are representative for the product

 Measure always lengthwise and the same way each time
 Measure the fabric face!
 Measure at least 4 readings and refold (min. 3 cm) it before additional
readings
 Make sure that the sample, which you are going to measure, is completely
opaque!

Care should always be taken to avoid dirt, fingerprints, creases, dye blotches or other
substances on the sample.

Digital Assessment
Instrumental Tolerances for s.Oliver Colors

The tolerance values may be used for expressing color differences and Pass/Fail
decisions. The total color difference dE (CMC 2:1) combines the differences of three
independent variables dL, dC and dH.

Type of Sample Illumination

Instrumental Tolerances for s.Oliver Colors

GENERAL NOTES:

 All approvals have to be done in the same Hue-direction!

The final assessment of a color has to be carried out visually

by using Illumination D65 and F11 in a standard light
cabinet. s. Oliver reserves the right to reject samples at its own
discretion.

S.OLIVER COLOR MANUAL
Where to find!

3.2 Color Quality Manual

 S.OLIVER WILL IMPLEMENT THE COLOR MANUAL

IN THE QUALITY GUIDELINE CATALOG CHAPTER 3.2!

 IT WILL BE PULBISHED 1st HALF 2009

 IT WILL BE EFFETIVE FORM THE DATE OF BEING PUBLISHED

S.OLIVER COLOR MANUAL
How to proceed!

 TOLERANCES AND PROCEEDING IS VALID FROM NOW ON,

BECAUSE WE WANT TO HAVE A TRIAL RUN OF THREE MONTH

 EACH LABDIP AND BULK-LOT MUST BE MEASURED ACCORDING

THE S.OLIVER COLOR MANUAL

 PLEASE SENT THE MEASURMENT REPORT A PHYSICAL SAMPLE

- LABDIP DIN A5 SIZE (210 mm x 148 mm)

- BULK MINIMUM DIN A4 SIZE (210 mm x 300 mm) BEST CASE
WOULD BE 50 cm OVER THE WHOLE WIDTH
