Drug abuse is the use of any chemical substance,
legal or illegal, resulting to individual’s physical,
mental, emotional impairment.

• Use of legal drugs without prescription or consultation with
a physician;
• Use of legal drugs for a purpose different from what it was
designed and prescribed for;
• Using drugs and substances without legitimate medical
application or purpose

Routes of Drug Administration
(How are Drugs Taken)
• Smoking - the drug is inhaled, goes to the
lungs and is then rapidly absorbed into the
bloodstream.
• Snorting - snorted chemicals will enter the
bloodstream through the mucus membrane in
the nose.
• Oral Route – swallowing the drugs allows the
drugs to move onto the stomach where they
are absorbed by the stomach lining and then
enter the bloodstream
• Injections: of putting fluid
into the body, usually with
a syringe and a
hollow needle which is
pierced through the skin to a
sufficient depth for the drugs
to be administered into the
body
• Suppositories –Drugs is
absorbed through the mucus
membrane in the rectum.
