What are fingerprints?
• Fingerprints are unique patterns, made by friction ridges (raised) and
furrows (recessed), which appear on the pads of the fingers and
thumbs.
Formation of prints
• Skin consists of:
1.Inner layer – dermis
2.Outer layer – epidermis
• Basal layer grows faster than the layers above and below it.
• Basal layer collapses and folds to form intricate shapes.
• The folds and pores create unique patterns even amongst identical
twin.
Structure of skin
How are fingerprints left behind?
• The pores in the skin within the ridges of the fingers continuously
secretes a substance.
• The secreted substance contains 98-99% of water and 1-2% of other
organic and inorganic materials.
• Objects that have an oily or greasy residue transfers the materials to
the fingers when touched.
• All of the materials that gather in the ridges can be transferred from
the finger to the touched object, leaving behind a distinct fingerprint.
Types of prints found at a crime scenes
There are three types of prints that can be found at the scene of a crime:-
• Latent
• Patent
• Plastic
Latent fingerprints
• These fingerprints are typically invisible to naked eye.
• It is left unintentionally, and may be left behind without the person
being aware of it.
• It is a crucial piece of evidence in many criminal investigation.
• To reveal latent fingerprints, forensic scientist may use a variety of
techniques including powders, chemicals, and UV light.
Latent Prints Are Found On:
• Crime scene
On surfaces such as doors, walls, handrails, windows, other entry points, on
item of evidence such as weapons or stolen property.
• Personal belongings
Cell phones, computers, other electronic devices, documents.
• Vehicles
Steering wheels, door handles, other surfaces inside and outside the vehicle.
• Household items
Appliances, kitchenware, and furniture.

Patent fingerprints
• These are the visible impressions or marks left by the friction ridges of
the fingers.
• It can be made by blood, grease, ink or dirt.
• It can be left behind intentionally or unintentionally.
• It is a first type of fingerprint that investigator look for at a crime
scene
• It can be collected using a variety of methods, including photography,
lifting or casting.
• They do not requires chemicals.
Patent Prints Are Found On
• Smooth or rough surfaces, porous(such as paper, clothes and wood)
non porous (such as metal, glass and plastics)

Plastic fingerprints
• These are impressions or marks left by the friction ridges of the
fingers on soft surfaces such as clay, wax, putty, or other materials.
• These are three dimensional impressions that can be felt as well as
seen.
• It should be photographed first.
• It can be collected using a variety of methods, including casting with
dental stone or other materials, or by creating a mold of the
impression.
Plastic Prints Are Found On:
• Household items
Soap, candles, and even on the surface of some types of food etc.
• Workplaces
Modelling clay, putty, wax seals, pottery, etc.
