Dividing Quantities in Given
Ratios
1. Add up the numbers in the given ratios
2. Divide the number into the given total.
(this number is the unit amount)
3. Multiply the unit amount by each part of the ratio
Example 1
Calculate the number of students in Answer:
each class if 60 students are divided into
classes in a ratio of
Total of ratio = 1 + 3 = 4
1:3
60 ÷ 4 = 15 (unit amount)

1 X 15 : 3 X 15

∴ = 15 : 45
(check by adding ratio and see if it equals
original amount)
15 + 45 = 60
Example 2
• Calculate the number of • Answer:
students in each class if 120
students are divided into classes Total of ratio = 5 + 1 = 6
in a ratio of
5:1 120 ÷ 6 = 20 (unit amount)

5 X 20 : 1 X 20

∴ = 100 : 20
(check by adding ratio and see if it
equals original amount)
100 + 20 = 120
Example 3
• Calculate the number of • Answer:
students in each class if 80
students are divided into classes Total of ratio = 1 + 2 + 7 = 10
in a ratio of
1:2:7 80 ÷ 10 = 8 (unit amount)

1X8:2X8:7X8

∴ = 8 : 16 : 56
(check by adding ratio and see if it
equals original amount)
8 + 16 + 56 = 80
