Ratios and Proportions
Compare two or more quantities to each other.
Allow us to scale up or scale down quantities, and apply known values
to unknown situations.
Example 1
• In year 12 there are 50 girls and Answer:
40 boys. Express this as a ratios
of girls to boys.
Order is important!!

50 girls : 40 boys

Simplify ratio
5:4
Example 2
• A year 10 class was surveyed • Answer:
about part time work. 10 worked Order is important:
at a supermarket, 8 in fast-food
and 6 did not have a job.
Express this as a ratio of fast- FF:S:NJ
food, to supermarket, to no job.
8:10:6

Simplify if possible:
4:5:3
Example 3
• Cordial is made in a ratio of one • Answer:
part cordial to four parts water. Order is important:

Express this as a ratio C:W

1:4

Simplify if possible:
1:4
Simplifying Ratios
1. Find a common factor
2. Divide by common factor
3. Repeat as necessary
Example 1
• Simplify 25:15 Answer:

Factors of 25: 1, 5, 25
Factors of 15: 1, 3, 5, 15

Common Factor: 5
Divide 25 by 5
Divide 15 by 5

= 5:3
Example 2
• Simplify 0.4 : 1.7 • Answer:
- Make into whole numbers first. Right
hand digit is in the tenths column so
multiply both numbers by 10
= 4 : 17

Check for common factors:

Factors of 4: 1, 2, 4
Factors of 17: 1, 17
No common factors
Therefore simplified
(multiply both sides by 4)
Example 3
X4: x4
• Simplify
3 : (multiply both sides by 3)

Answer:
3X3: X3
Need to make into whole
numbers first. 9 : 20
Have to multiply both fractions Find common factors:
by each of the denominators. 9: 1, 3, 9
Do one at a time. 20: 1, 2, 4, 5, 10, 20
No common factors
∴ = 9 : 20
