Non-communicable diseases (NCDs)
● also known as chronic diseases, tend to be of
long duration and are the result of a
combination of genetic, physiological,
environmental and behavioural factors.
(WHO)
● not caused by pathogens or disease causing
organisms such as bacteria or viruses but
rather by how people live, by the conditions
with which they are born or by hazards
around them.
KEY FACTS:
● Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) kill 41
million people each year, equivalent to 71% of all
deaths globally.
● Cardiovascular diseases account for most NCD
deaths, or 17.9 million people annually, followed
by cancers (9.3 million), respiratory diseases (4.1
million), and diabetes (1.5 million).
TYPES OF NON-COMMUNICABLE DISEASE
1. Allergy- a misguided reaction to foreign substances
by the immune system.
* Allergen- substances that trigger the allergy.
Example:
• Pollens
• Dust mite
• Molds
• Dander
• Certain foods
TYPES OF NON-COMMUNICABLE DISEASE
A. Hay fever (Allergic Rhinitis)
 most common of the allergic
disease
 characterized by seasonal nasal
symptom that are due to pollens
after allergens are inhaled.
Signs and symptoms:
 Runny nose, Stuffy nose,
Sneezing, Nasal itching (rubbing),
Itchy ears and throat, and
TYPES OF NON-COMMUNICABLE DISEASE
B. Allergic Conjunctivitis
 Inflammation of the membranes
that cover the surface of the
eyeball and the eyelid
Signs and symptoms:
 Redness under the lids and the
eyes
 Watery, itchy eyes
 Swelling of membranes
TYPES OF NON-COMMUNICABLE DISEASE
C. Allergic eczema
 Caused by skin contact with an
allergen
Signs and symptoms:
 Itching, redness, and or dryness of
the skin
 Rash on the face, especially among
children
 Rash around the eyes, in the elbow
and knees, especially in adults.

shock)
 Life threatening reaction that can
affect the number of organ.
Signs and symptoms:
 Hives or reddish discoloration of the
skin
 Stomach pain, nausea, vomiting
 Shortness of breath
 Low blood pressure
 Nasal congestion , swelling of throat
TYPES OF NON-COMMUNICABLE DISEASE
2. Asthma
 Is a chronic lung disorder that
causes airways to become inflamed.
 swell and produce lots of thick
mucus
Signs and symptoms:
 Shortness of breath
 Wheezing
 Coughing
 Chest tightness
TYPES OF NON-COMMUNICABLE DISEASE
3. Cardiovascular disease
 Cardio- means the “heart”
a. Heart Diseases
 Congenital heart disease- abnormality in the heart’s
structure
 Congestive heart failure- inability of the heart to keep
up with the demands on it
 Arrhythmia- heart beats with an irregular or abnormal
rhythm
 Myocardial infraction (heart attack)- occurs when the
heart muscle tissue dies from lack of oxygen.
TYPES OF NON-COMMUNICABLE DISEASE
Vascular- means the “blood vessels”
b. Vascular Diseases
 Arteriosclerosis- thickening and loss of elasticity of arterial walls.
 Hypertension (high blood pressure)- occurs when blood pressure is
higher than normal.
 Stroke- occurs when a clot blocks a small blood vessel in the brain,
thus brain cells die from lack of oxygen
 Aneurysm- is an excessive localized enlargement of an artery
caused by a weakening of the artery.
TYPES OF NON-COMMUNICABLE DISEASE
4. Cancer
 Is caused by abnormal cells growing
without control.
 They form as masses called tumors.
 Tumors can either be:
 Benign- not cancerous and do not spread
 Malignant- cancerous and spread to the
other parts of the body.
TYPES OF NON-COMMUNICABLE DISEASE
 MOST COMMON CANCERS
 Skin-most common, 95% recovery or chance of survival.
 Colon and rectum- mostly in men but increasingly in women.
 Lungs-mostly in men, only 10% of treated patient lived.
 Breast- most common in women, about 70% of treated females
recovered.
 Reproductive organ- male: prostate gland, testicle
female: cervix, more than 60% of patients treated recovered
 Bone marrow- most common type in children, about 85% of
treated patients lived.
TYPES OF NON-COMMUNICABLE DISEASE
5. DIABETES
 A disease that prevents the body from
converting food into energy.
 pancreas does not produce enough insulin
