Title: The Eye

KEYWORDS: Iris, Lenses, Bend, Retina,
Cornea

Fish: What are some structures of the eye?

Dog: What are the three main sections of the brain?
What do they do?
Elephant: What is a pathogen?
Learning Objectives
ALL: Identify the main structures of the eye (1-3)
MOST: Describe what happens to the eye in bright light. (4-6)
SOME: Explain in detail the changes to the eye in response to
changes in light intensity. (7-9)

How does the eye work?
1. Rays of light are refracted (bent) first by the cornea
and then by the lens.

2. They focus on the retina where the image is

projected and sent to the brain for processing.
Lens Retina

Cornea
The Retina

The retina contains two main type of photoreceptors:

rods and cones.
They produce colour
vision
Rods are more sensitive to light Prince William is
Useful in dim light colourblind.

What part of his eye

may be causing this?
Focusing on different distances - accomodation

Distant objects = ciliary muscles

relax, suspensory ligaments
tighten, lens gets thinner.
This bends the light more
towards the retina.
Lens pulled thin

For close objects = ciliary

muscles contract, suspensory
ligaments loosen, lens thickens.
This bends the light more
towards the retina.
Lens gets thicker
Using lenses to
correct vision

Short sightedness - MYOPIA Long sightedness - HYPEROPIA

• Can’t focus on things far away • Can’t focus on things close up
• Lens is the wrong shape/eyeball • Lens is the wrong shape/eyeball
too long too short
• Corrected with a concave lens • Corrected with a convex lens
Correcting vision
Laser eye surgery:
lasers vaporize tissue in the cornea to change its shape
Easy, quick and long-term
Can have complications from surgery
Contact lenses:
thin lenses that sit on the eye
Lightweight

Ideal for use in sporting

activities

Can cause infections, or can be

forgotten and cause damage to
the cornea
The Iris Reflex

When the light is bright the When the light is dim the
radial muscles relax, the radial muscles contract,
circular muscles contract and the circular muscles relax
the pupil decreases in size. and the pupil increases in
size.
