Descartes' Rule of Signs

• If is a polynomial with real coefficients whose terms are arranged in

descending powers of the variable,
• The number of positive real zeroes of is the same as the number of
changes in sign of the coefficients of the terms, or is less than this by
an even number, and
• The number of negative real zeroes of 𝑦 = 𝑃( 𝑥) is the same as the
number of changes in sign of the coefficients of the terms of is less
than this by an even number.

End Behavior
• End behavior is a description of the values of the
function as approaches infinity ( or negative
infinity (

• The degree and leading

coefficient of a polynomial
function determine its end
behavior.
Case #1
• If the degree is odd and the leading coefficient is
positive, then graph falls to the left and rises to
the right.

Case #2
• If the degree is odd and the leading coefficient is
negative, then graph rises to the left and falls to
the right.

As As
Case #3
• If the degree is even and the leading coefficient is
positive, then graph rises to the left and to the
right.

Case #4
• If the degree is even and the leading coefficient is
negative, then graph falls to the left and to the
right.

Multiplicities of Zeroes and the -intercept
• The exponent indicates how many times that factor would be written
out in the product, this gives us a multiplicity.
Case #1
If is a zero of even multiplicity:
• This means the graph touches the at and turns
around.

The number of times a zero occurs is called its multiplicity.

Case #2
If is a zero of even multiplicity:
• This means the graph crosses the at

The number of times a zero occurs is called its multiplicity.

Turning Points

• If is a polynomial function of degree then there

is at most turning points on the graph of
• A turning point is a point at which the graph
changes direction.
Real Zeroes of a Polynomial Function
• The maximum number of zeroes of a polynomial function is equal to
the degree of the polynomial.
• A zero of a function is a point at which graph intersects the 𝑥−axis.
• On a graph count the number of real zeroes of the function by
counting the number of times the graph crosses or touches the
𝑥−axis.

Guidelines for Graphing Polynomial Functions
1. Zeroes
• Factor the Polynomial to find all its real zeroes; these are the intercepts of the
graph.

2. Test Points
• Test points to determine whether the graph of the polynomial lies above or
below the on the intervals determined by the zeroes.

3. End Behavior
• Determine the end behavior of the polynomial.

4. Graph
• Plot the intercepts and intercept. Sketch a smooth curve that passes through
these points and exhibits the required end behavior.
Sketch the Graph
STEP 1
• Factor the polynomial to find all its real zeroes; these are the
intercepts of the graph.

STEP 2
• Plot the intercepts of the graph
Sketch the Graph

STEP 3
• Determine the end behavior of the polynomial.
• Since the degree is odd and the leading coefficient is positive.

STEP 4
• Determine the intercept

STEP 5
• Use test points to determine whether the graph of the polynomial lie
above or below the 𝑥−axis on the intervals determined by the zeroes
