Research design

o Research design refers

to the basic strategy of
the research by defining
an action plan that
proceeds from the
primary research
questions up to the
conclusions and the
justification behind it
(Oppenheim, 1992).
Purpose of research
design
To collect the relevant data and techniques
To provide blue print for plans
To provide an overview for other experts
To facilitate the smooth scaling
To minimize the expenditure
To provide a direction
Types of Research Design
Descriptive research
Explanatory research
Exploratory research
Evaluation research
DESCRIPTIVE DESIGN
In a descriptive research design, the researcher
can choose to be either a complete observer,
an observer as a participant, a participant as
an observer, or a full participant.
For example, in a supermarket, a researcher can
from afar monitor and track the customers'
selection and purchasing trends.
• Explanatory research generally focuses on the
“why” questions. For example, a business might
ask why customers aren't buying their product
or how they can improve their sales process.
EVALUATION RESEARCH
• Evaluative research is a type of research used to evaluate a
product or concept, and collect data to help improve your
solution. Evaluative research has many benefits, including
identifying whether a product works as intended, and uncovering
areas for improvement within your solution.
Two types of evaluation research
QUALITATIVE RESEARCH
What is qualitative reseach?
A central questions that states the objectiveor the problem
Has a pre set proceduresor sequence in order to answer research
questions
Reviews the generated data
The collection and analysis of data are done inorder to draw
conclusions.
Quantitative research
What is quantitative research?
A quantitative research analyzes variable relationship in terms of
numbers and statistical strategies to review findings, and is
generally divided into four main types ,
Descriptive design
Correlational design
Quasi-expiremental desin
Expiremental design
Descriptive research design
aims to accurately and systematically describe a population, situation or
phenomenon.
Correlational research design

investigates relationships between variables without the researcher

controlling or manipulating any of them
Quasi-experimental design
aims to establish a cause-and-
effect relationship between
an independent and
dependent variable
EXPERIMENTAL
RESEARCH DESIGN
a framework of protocols and procedures created to conduct
experimental research with a scientific approach using two sets of
variables
7 STEPS TO HAVE WELL
PLANNED RESEARCH
DESIGN
Step 1: Reflect on your
hypothesis
Step 2: Decide on research
approach
Step 3: Select the type of
research design
Step 4: Define your
population and sampling
method
Step 5 : Select data collection
method
Step 6: design your data
collection process
Step 7: Develop approach to
data analysis
Having a clear path to the
delivery of your research will
reduce the anxiety and
uncertainty associated with
your work. Follow the 7-step
process outlined in this article
