BOYLE’S LAW

RECALL
What are the properties of gases?
•Gas has mass.
•Gas has volume.
•Gas has temperature.
•Gas has pressure.
•Have you observed the air exhaled
by the fishes in the aquarium?
•It gets bigger and bigger as it rises
because the pressure at the bottom
of the aquarium is higher than the
pressure near the surface.
The relationship between the volume
and pressure of gases at constant
temperature is one of the gas laws
called BOYLE’S LAW named after the
Irish scientist, Robert Boyle. He found
out that as the pressure is increased,
the volume decreases. He finally
concluded that the volume of a fixed
amount of gas is inversely proportional
Robert Boyle to its pressure at constant
temperature.
BOYLE’S LAW
•The volume of a confined dry gas
varies inversely with the pressure
applied on it, provided the
temperature remains the same.
V₁P₁ = V₂P₂
Sample Problem
•If 100 mL of H₂ was collected at
760mmHg, what is the new
volume of gas when the
barometer reads 745 mmHg at
this same temperature?
Learning Task 1: Boyle’s Law
PROCEDURE:
1. Solve the following problem.
Show your solution.
1. Oxygen gas inside a 1.5 L gas
tank has a pressure of 0.95 atm.
Provided that the temperature
remains constant, how much
pressure is needed to reduce its
volume by ½?
2. A scuba diver needs a diving tank
in order to provide breathing gas
while he is underwater. How much
pressure is needed for 6.00 liters of
gas at 1.01 atmospheric pressure to
be compressed in a 3.00 liter
cylinder ?
3. A sample of fluorine gas occupies
a volume of 500 mL at 760 torr.
Given that the temperature remains
the same, calculate the pressure
required to reduce its volume by
1/3.
Solve the problem below for mastery.
•250mL of ammonia gas was
collected at a pressure of 1atm and
25⁰C. How many mmHg should the
pressure be to change the volume
to 1L under the same temperature?
APPLICATION
•Application of Boyle’s Law is
illustrated in a tank or metal
cylindrical containing a gas such as
oxygen, acetylene or hydrogen. The
gas is forced into a definite volume
of cylinder under pressure.
EVALUATION. Solve and show your solution.
The inflated balloon that slipped from the
hand of Renn has a volume of 0.50 L at sea
level (1.0 atm) and it reached a height of
approximately 8 km where the atmospheric
pressure is approximately 0.33 atm.
Assuming that the temperature is constant,
compute for the final volume of the balloon.
