AUTHORITY

AND POWER VS.

LEADERSHIP
What is
Authority?
Authority is the right to give
orders and the power to exact
obedience

-Henri Fayol-
“Authority is the principle at the root of the
organization and so important that is it
impossible to conceive of an organization at all
unless of some person or persons are in a
position to require action of others”
- Mooney and Reily-
Now we have authority . Here, we do not
need to isolate a great leader; we can look at just
about any policeman or fireman and say they have
authority. When a policeman tells you to do
something, you usually comply, as he is in a position
of authority. The truth is most managers are in a
position of authority; what differs is just how they
use it. That is because with authority, a person has
the right to give you an order or direction.
What is Power?
• Power is an attempt to influence another individual.

• Power is a real world issue: those who understand

power can use it more effectively.

• Power is the ability to induce a person to do

something they would not have done otherwise.

• M.F Rogers defines power as the potential of

influence.
 When we think of power, which is the ability to do
something the specific way you want it done by any
means necessary, one individual that comes to mind is
Napoleon Bonaparte.

We then can take a moment to look
at leadership. A person that comes to
mind is John Kennedy.

Authority is also necessary for leadership.
Because of their decisiveness,
accomplishment track record, influence,
courage, and inspiration, great leaders are
able to help their teams accomplish great
things. Great leaders may have power, but
they are more likely to hold it in reserve and
rely on authority to lead.
