Problems in Traditional Optical Networks
End-to-end services can only be configured segment by segment via the
network management system, which results in a longer commissioning period.
Traditional optical networks do not support fast automatic setup and protection
of end-to-end services.
Differentiated services are unavailable without diverse Quality of Service
(QoS).
Cross-ring nodes in ring networks are bottlenecks for service scheduling.
The bandwidth utilization ratio of a Synchronous Digital Hierarchy
(SDH) ring is low, because 50% of the bandwidth is reserved for network
protection.
Network load cannot be balanced and optimized automatically.
Network topology changes cannot be reflected on the network management
system in real-time.
Traditional optical networks use network management systems with multiple
hierarchies, which manage a great diversity of equipment. Accordingly, different
network management systems are used to manage different types of NEs such as
Digital Cross Connect (DXC), Add/Drop Multiplexer (ADM), Wavelength
Division Multiplexing (WDM), etc.

UNI ASON Interface
UNI is an interface between the client end and the ASON
equipment. It is a bidirectional signaling interface between two
control plane entities, one of which requests service and the other
provides service. The client end network can automatically request
to setup a new connection, query or release existing connections
via UNI.
UNI, located between the client end and the optical network,
supports call security and authorization and number service. UNI
provides the functions of call control, resource discovery,
connection control and connection selection.

E-NNI ASON Interface
E-NNI is a bidirectional signaling interface between two control
plane entities in different control domains. The purpose of E-NNI
is to exchange accessibility information between different domains
regardless of the topology information inside a network. E-NNI
supports the functions of call control, resource discovery,
connection control, connection selection and connection route
selection.

I-NNI ASON Interface
I-NNI is a bidirectional signaling interface between two control
plane entities in the same control domain.
The purpose of I-NNI is to deliver the topology information to
each connection unit inside a network. As an intra-domain
interface, I-NNI can use private protocols defined by vendors
without the requirement for standardization. I-NNI supports the
functions of resource discovery, connection control, connection
selection and connection route selection.

Functional Structure of ASON
1. Intelligent NE:
An intelligent Network Element (NE) is added with link management function,
signaling function and routing function on the basis of a traditional NE.

2. TE Link:
TE link is traffic engineering link. The control plane floods the bandwidth
information of the resources to the whole network in the form of TE link.
TE link includes two types: protected and unprotected.
Protected type
– If the network is configured as an STM-64 two-fiber shared protection ring,
then no. 1~32 VC4s form a protected TE link.
– If the network is configured as an STM-64 four-fiber shared path protection
ring, then no. 1~64 VC4s form a protected TE link.
Unprotected type
– If the STM-64 network is not configured with any protection mode, then no.
1~64 VC4s form an unprotected TE link.

Functional Structure of ASON
3. SPC:
SPC is a service connection mode between PC and SC. The portion from users
to the transport network is configured by the EMS, while the connection
within the transport network is requested by the EMS to the control plane, and
then configured by the control plane of the intelligent NE through signaling.
SPC is commonly known as intelligent path or intelligent service.

Protection and Restoration
Protection:
Protection is the procedure to configure a protection connection in
advance, and switch the service to the protection connection when
the working connection fails.

The protection switching time is generally completed in 50ms.

All the information involved in the file belongs to ZTE. Any kind of releasing without permission is prohibited
Internal Public▲
Protection and Restoration
ASON supports two protection mechanisms as follows:
Protection based on the transport plane:
Multiplex Section Protection (MSP)
Sub-Network Connection Protection (SNCP)
Protection based on the control plane:
1+1 protection: Services are transported on both the working link and
protection link. Signals with the best quality are received at the receiving end.

1:1 protection: Services are transported only on the working link. The
protection link does not transport services or transports services with lower
priorities. When the working link fails, the services are switched to the
protection link, and the services on the protection link is discarded.

1:N protection (1≤N≤15): N working links share one protection link. N can be
preset. The protection link can carry low-priority services. When a working link
fails, its services are switched to the protection link, which discards its original
low-priority services. If more than one working links fail at the same time, only
one working link is protected.

Protection and Restoration
Restoration:
Restoration is a procedure to replace a failed connection by
rerouting for a new connection with idle capacity in the network.
The service restoration takes a long time because of route
recalculation in setting up a restoration connection. The
restoration time for a single service is within 2 seconds when the
network is free.

All the information involved in the file belongs to ZTE. Any kind of releasing without permission is prohibited
Internal Public▲
Protection and Restoration
Restoration Methods:

Dynamic rerouting restoration:

When a fault occurs, the ASON NE calculates a restoration route
for the working connection in real time, selects standby resources,
and sets up a new connection to replace the faulty connection.
The real-time route calculation takes a long time for restoring
services, and does not need to preoccupy resources.

Protection and Restoration
Restoration Methods:

Pre-planned rerouting restoration:

The ASON NE calculates a restoration route for the working
connection in advance before the occurrence of faults. When a
fault occurs, the restoration connection is activated to replace the
faulty connection. The pre-calculation of routes takes a short time,
and needs to preoccupy resources.

ASON Protocols
The protocols of ZXUCP A100 include:

 OSPF:
(Open Shortest Path First): Routing protocol for routing
calculation and flooding.

 RSVP:
(Resource Reservation Protocol): Signaling protocol for traffic
created, modified, deleted, etc.

 LMP:
(Link management protocol): protocol for resource support and
neighbor node discovery.

Link Management Protocol (LMP)
LMP runs on the transport plane between adjacent nodes to
manage control channels and links.

LMP consists of the following functions:

1. Control channel management

2. Link property correlation

3. Link verification

4. Link fault management.

Link Management Protocol (LMP)
Control Channel Management:
Control channel management is used to establish and maintain
control channel connectivity between adjacent nodes.

Link Property Correlation:

Link property correlation is used to aggregate multiple data links
into a single TE link and to synchronize link properties.
This function greatly reduces the delivery of Link State
Advertisement (LSA) messages in the network.

All the information involved in the file belongs to ZTE. Any kind of releasing without permission is prohibited

Link Management Protocol (LMP)
Link Verification:
Link verification is used to verify the physical connectivity of the
data links, so as to implement the mapping from the local
interface ID to the remote interface ID.

The link verification procedure is initiated through the messages

on the control channel. It is implemented with the coordination
between the control channel and the data channel. Link
verification procedure is optional depending on the configuration
of verification flag during parameter negotiation. After link
verification, a local-to-remote interface ID mapping table with
definite link states can be achieved.

All the information involved in the file belongs to ZTE. Any kind of releasing without permission is prohibited

Link Management Protocol (LMP)
Link Fault Management:
Link fault management is initiated by a downstream node that
detects data link fault. It is used to exchange channel fault
messages and response messages, so as to detect link state hop by
hop along Label Switched Path (LSP) towards the up-stream until
localizing the faulty link. This procedure enables quick response
to link faults and precise location of faulty links.

Routing Protocol (OSPF-TE)
The routing protocol implements the following functions:
Establishes neighbor relations.
Creates and maintains the control link.
Floods and collects the control link information and generates
route information of the control plane, then provides routes for
forwarding message packets on the control plane.
Floods and collects the TE link information of the transport
plane, and provides network topology information for calculating
service routes.

Signaling Protocol (RSVP-TE)
RSVP protocol originates from the IP Class of Service (IPCoS)
technology, with better functions in resource synchronization
and error handling. It can better handle the abnormal cases
such as power failure, and realize multicast more easily. The
signaling protocol implements the following functions:

 Creating Label Switched Path (LSP)

 Deleting LSP
 Rerouting LSP
 Optimizing routes of LSP

All the information involved in the file belongs to ZTE. Any kind of releasing without permission is prohibited

Control Link Automatic Discovery
ASON automatically discovers the control link via the OSPF-TE protocol.

After the optical fibers are connected between ASON devices, each intelligent
NE can automatically discover the control link via the OSPF-TE protocol and
flood its control link to the whole network. The result of flooding is that each NE
gets the control link information of the whole network, that is, the control
topology of the whole network.

Then each intelligent NE calculates its shortest routes to other intelligent NEs
based on the control topology, and writes these routes into the route forwarding
table for the signaling protocol RSVP-TE to use.

An intelligent NE can automatically discover the control topology of the whole

network and report it to the EMS. Then the control topology is displayed on the
Element Management System (EMS) in real time.

TE Link Automatic Discovery
ASON automatically discovers the TE link via the OSPF-TE protocol.

After the intelligent NE creates the control channel between neighboring NEs via
the LMP protocol, the TE link can be verified. After the TE link verification is
completed, each intelligent NE floods its TE link information to the whole
network via OSPF-TE. Thus every NE gets the TE link information of the whole
network, that is, the resource topology of the whole network, which provides
service topology information for route calculation.

ASON can discover the changes of the TE link status in real time, including link
increase, link parameter change, link deletion, etc., and report them to the EMS.
Then the EMS refreshes the TE link status in real time.

If one of the TE links breaks, the EMS will refresh the resource topology in real
time.

Creating Label Switched Path (LSP)
The process of creating an LSP is as below:
1. After setting up a new call on the EMS, the EMS issues a command of creating
an LSP to the first node, NE 1.
2. With CSPF algorithm, NE 1 obtains the control plane topology and transport
plane topology by convergence of OSPF-TE protocol, and calculates the best
call route: assuming as NE1-NE2-NE3.
3. Based on the calculated route, NE 1 sends a message to NE 2, through RSVP-
TE signaling protocol, requesting for reserved resource, and NE 1 establishes
cross-connection at the same time.
4. NE 2 sends a message to NE 3, through RSVP-TE signaling protocol,
requesting for reserved resource, and NE 2 establishes cross-connection at the
same time.
5. NE 3 establishes cross-connection, and then sends back a message to NE 2
through RSVP-TE signaling protocol.
6. NE 2 sends back a message to NE 1.
7. NE 1 receives the returned message, and then reports to the EMS. Now an LSP
is created.

Deleting LSP
ZXUCP A100 supports graceful deletion of an LSP, and the process of
deletion is as follows:

1. The EMS issues a command to the first node, NE 1, requesting to delete

the LSP from NE 1 to NE 3.
2. NE 1 sends a message to NE 3, through RSVP-TE signaling, informing
that the LSP will be deleted.
3. NE 3 sends a message to NE 2, through RSVP-TE signaling, informing
that the LSP will be deleted.
4. NE 2 releases the resource engaged by LSP, and then sends back a
message to NE 3.
5. NE 3 releases the resource engaged by LSP, and then sends back a
message to NE 1.
6. NE 1 releases the resource engaged by LSP, and then reports to the
EMS. Now an LSP is deleted.

Tunnel Services
Generally, ASON only carries services with a rate of VC4 or
higher. When carrying services with lower rates, the tunnel
technology is adopted for transport. When establishing a tunnel
service, an LSP is established first, and then the service with
lower rate is cross connected to the tunnel at the first node and
the last node. The service with lower rate is transported through
the tunnel.

Configuring DCC/ECC
Through configuring the DCC use and changing the DCC byte of the port, the
following functions can be provided:

The communication rate of NEs will be improved with the DCC configuration
of DCCr + DCCm.

As long as the DCC byte of the abutting optical interfaces keeps the same
value, any line port can use DCCr or DCCm to carry the communication data
separately.

When the DCC is not used for optical interfaces, non-communication data can
be transmitted through the pass-through connection between DCCr and DCCm
among different ports with the overhead cross-connect function of the EMS.

The DCC byte can be configured separately and differently in the receiving
direction and the transmitting direction.

Configuring Control Interfaces
Generally, ASON uses in-band control channel to transfer
control information. Only the iNNI Ctrl needs to be
configured at this time.

When the out-of-band control channel is used to transfer

control information, NNI Ctrl and Out Band Neighbor need
to be configured. At this time, the supporting DCN or SDH
network should be available to provide the out-of-band
control channel.

Weight: Link Selection priority

The valid range is 1 – 4294967295.

The smaller the weight is, the link has a higher priority of
being chosen when the route selection policy is based on the
lowest link cost. When a fiber cut or an MS alarm occurs, the
weight of the TE link will be identified as the maximum value
automatically and no need to be modified.

Configuring TE Link Property
Users can set the TE link parameters: weight and SRLG.

SRLG is Shared Risk Link Group.

In practical application, some links are under the same

physical risk. For example, these links are fibers in the same
cable. When the cable is broken, all the links will be broken.
Therefore, these links can be included in a same SRLG, that
is, the SRLG values of these links can be set to the same
value. When the intelligent service is rerouting, the links with
the same SRLG value will be avoided.
