Section 9 - 2
The Parabola
The parabola is the locus of all points in a plane that are
the same distance from a line in the plane, the directrix,
as from a fixed point in the plane, the focus.
(x - h)2 = 4p(y - k)
(x - (-2))2 = 4(2)(y - 6)
(x + 2)2 = 8(y - 6) Standard form
Analyzing a Parabola
Find the coordinates of the vertex and focus,
the equation of the directrix, the axis of symmetry,
and the direction of opening of 2x2 + 4x - 2y + 6 = 0.
2x2 + 4x - 2y + 6 = 0
1 = 2y - 6 + _____
2(x2 + 2x + _____) 2(1)
2(x + 1)2 = 2(y - 2)
(x + 1)2 = (y - 2)
4p = 1
p=¼
The parabola opens to upward.
The vertex is (-1, 2).
The focus is ( -1, 2 ¼ ).
The Equation of directrix is y = 1¾ .
The axis of symmetry is x = -1 .
Graphing a Parabola
y2 - 10x + 4y - 16 = 0
y2 + 4y + _____
4 = 10x + 16 + _____
4
(y + 2)2 = 10x + 20
(y + 2)2 = 10(x + 2)
