• Is the art of cutting and joining of
woods

1. Hardwoods
• These woods come from broad-
leaved trees
2. Softwoods
• These woods come from coniferous
trees

Lumber
• Trees that grow in our forest and
mountains comes in various types
and species
Lumber
• Strip lumber, which is less than 4
inches wide and is sold by linear
foot

• A piece of timber 12 feet long and
3 inches wide is sold at 12 linear
feet

1. First Group
• This type of lumber is usually hard
with fine grain
2. Second Group
• This type of wood is moderately
hard and heavy with fine grain
3. Third Group
• This type of wood usually used for
floorings, furniture making, and
some for charcoal making
4. Fourth Group
• This type of wood is used for cheap
furniture, cabinet making, interior
finishing

DIRECTIONS:
Roam inside the industrial laboratory and look for any
object that is made from wood. Name some of it and
identify what group of wood it is. Describe each wood
as to color, grain, texture, thickness, weight, and other
characteristics.

Wire Nail
 this is the most common form of
nail that has a large flat head and
is used in general carpentry
Finishing Nails
 this is slenderer than the common
wire nail with a smaller head that
can be embedded into wood
Scaffold Nails
 this type of nail has two heads, so
that the second or outer head allows
the nail to be easily removed once
the scaffold is removed
Roofing Nails
this type of nail has a bigger but
flatter head than common wire nail
and has a shorter length
Screw
screws are types of fasteners used
for securing wood together
Bolts and Nuts
- are used for delicate work, like
joining wood to metal or masonry
Fastener
HINGE - used to fasten two movable
pieces of wood, like window panels,
doors, cabinets, trunks, and chest
boxes
Butt Hinge
 Most used hinge yet the most
difficult to fasten
Chest Hinge
 is a kind of hinge where one leaf is
folded so that when fastened, it is
invisible from the outside
Continous Hinge
 is similar in form to the butt hinge
but greater in length
Screen Hinge
is used for doors that can be pushed
and pulled
Soss Hinge
is used for woodwork to which,
when attached, appears as if it has no
fastener
Surface Hinge
 comes in varied shapes and is easier
to fasten than the butt hinge
Glue
an important material in woodworking trades
because many types of wood joints are, in part,
held together
