LEARNING
OBJECTIVE
S
At the end of the discussion, students are expected to:

• Identify the components of tree, the parts of a trunk, and

their uses in construction materials;
• Classify wood s into natural and engineered and
understand their characteristics and application in
construction materials; and

• Describe the properties and uses of different types of

natural woods commonly used in construction.
Upon having your
construction, what are
the things you
consider?
ORIGIN
COMPONENTS:
ROOTS
STEM OR TRUNK
CROWN
Wood is primsrily derived from the crown, stem or trunk and roots of
trees and other woody plants. Trees are the primary source of wood,
and they grow in various regions of the world, depending on the
climate and soil conditions. The growth of the trees is dependent on the
various factors, including temperature, rainfall, and sunlight. The
quality and characteristics of wood depend on various factors,
including the species of the tree, the age of the tree, the climate and soil
condition where the tree grew, and the processing methods used to
prepare the wood for use. Wood is an essential material for may
applications, incluidng construction, furniture, paper production and
fuel.

LOG
A log is a section of a tree trunk or
branch that has been cut or fallen.
The size and shape of a log depend on
the size and shape of the tree trunk or
branch is was cut from.
TIMBER
Timber is a term used to describe wood that has
been prepared for use in construction and
other applications. It is typically derived from
the trees that have been harvested for their
wood, and it is processed to standardized
sizes, and shape, such as beams, boards, and
planks.
PLANK
A plank is a piece of lumber that is
rectangular in shape and has a flat
surface on one or more sides.
Planks are commonly used in
construction, furniture-making,
and other wood working
application.
LUMBER
Lumber is a wood that has been
processed into standardized sizes and
shapes, such as boards, planks, or
beams. Lumber is typically derived
from logs that have been sawn into
different dimensions, depending on
the intended use.
STICK
A stick is a slender and elongated piece
of wood, typically taken from a tree
branch or sapling. Sticks can be
found in a variety of shapes and
size, depending on the source tree
and how the stick was prepared.
LATTICE
Lattice is a type of framework made of
thin strips of wood, plastic or metal
that cross over each other at regular
intervals to create a pattern of
squares and diamonds. It is often used
as a decorative element in outdoor
spaces, such as gardens, patios, and
decks.
