Learning Outcomes
By the end of this topic students will be able to:
• Present a range of data in graphical form
• Present a range of linear equations in graphical form
y 0 4 16 36 64
Basic Rules
• Basic rules for drawing graphs:
- Values of x are always plotted along the horizontal axis and
values of y along the vertical axis.
- We need to chose a suitable scale for our axis
Plot Information
When a graph is either a
straight line or smooth curve
we can use the graph to
deduce corresponding values
of x and y between those given
in the table (interpolation).
Drawing Graphs - 1
• The table below gives corresponding values of x and y.
Plot a graph and from it estimate the value of x when y =
30.
x 0 1 2 3 4 5
y 3 5 11 21 35 63
Drawing Graphs - 2
Drawing our graph gives
us this curve
x -3 -2 -1 0 1 2 3 4
2x -6 -4 -2 0 2 4 6 8
–5 -5 -5 -5 -5 -5 -5 -5 -5
y = 2x – 5 -11 -9 -7 -5 -3 -1 1 3
