Quarter 4 Week 4-5

Motion of the Earth and Its

Effect
What I Need to Know
Lesson objectives :
• Differentiate between rotation and
revolution and describe the effects of
the earth’s motion.
What’s New

The earth is made up of rocks, soil, water

and air. It is one of the planets that spin
around the sun. The earth is a very tiny
part of the universe, but a home to many
forms of life.
The earth moves at a constant speed. It
follows a counterclockwise direction. The
earth moves in three ways: it rotates and
travels around the sun and moves
through the Milky Way Galaxy with the
rest of the planets in the Solar System.
What Is It?
The earth as it rotates on its axis
Rotation
The sun appears to rise in the east, travels
across the sky and sets in the west everyday. Yet
the sun does not move from east to west. Instead,
the earth is spinning on its axis at a regular and
steady rate once every 24 hours with respect to the
Sun, but once every 23 hours, 56 minutes, and 4
seconds with respect to other distant stars (Wikipedia,
the Free Encyclopedia). The movement of the earth on its
axis is called rotation, counterclockwise.
Revolution
The Earth rotates as it travels around the
Sun in space. The movement of the earth
around the Sun is called revolution. The
Earth revolves around the Sun in a
counterclockwise direction. It takes the
Earth a year or 365 ¼ days to revolve
around the Sun.
The Gregorian Calendar, which we
presently use has only 365 days. To
compensate for the excess time and
to keep the calendar in sync with the
revolution of the Earth, a Leap Year is
used every 4 years, adding one day to
the end of February.
Effect of Earth’s Rotation
The Earth travels around the Sun in a path or
orbit. This orbit has an elliptical shape. 1This is
the reason why sometimes the Earth is far from or
close to the Sun. The Sun is the closest star to
Earth. The apparent movement of the Sun is due
to the direction of Earth’s rotation. 2The rotation
of the Earth causes day and night. 3It also affects
the wind movement.
In the Northern Hemisphere, the air
that travels downward is deflected to the
right and in the Southern Hemisphere, the
air is deflected redirected to the left. This
movement of the wind in a deflected path
rather than in a straight line is called
Coriolis Effect. 4The earth rotation also
causes the tides in the oceans and seas.
Coriolis Effect
Effect of Earth’s Revolution
It takes 365 ¼ days for the Earth to
complete one revolution around the Sun.
This period defines a year. In some countries,
this movement of the earth causes
four seasons- summer, autumn, winter, and
spring. Why are there four seasons in
other countries?
Different parts of the Earth have
different seasons throughout the year
because of the earth’s revolution and tilt of
its axis. The Earth tilts at 23 degrees (0).

As a result, different parts of the earth

receive different amounts of sunlight at
different times of the year.

Summer begins in the Northern
Hemisphere on June 21 or 22. North Pole is
tilted to its full 23 ½ degrees towards the
Sun, thus, Northern Hemisphere
experiences its longest daylight period and
Southern Hemisphere experiences its
shortest daylight. Winter starts on
December 21 or 22.
At this time the North Pole is tilted to
its full 23 ½ degrees away from the Sun,
thus,
shortest daylight period occurs in
Northern Hemisphere and longest daylight
occurs in Southern Hemisphere.
Twice a year, the daytime and night
time periods are of equal length. On these
days the axis is tilted neither toward nor
from the Sun.
On March 21, the length of the day and
night is equal, called Spring equinox. On
September 23, the day and night again are
of equal length. It is called Autumnal
Equinox.
C. Learning Activities
A. Read and understand the following questions.
Write the letter of the correct answer on the space
provided.
____1. In what direction does the Earth rotate?
a. from south to north c. from east to west `
b. from north to south d. from west to east
____2. How long does it take for the Earth to make

a complete rotation on its axis?

a. one day c. one week
____3. Rotation of the Earth causes ______

different places
a. I only
b. I and II
c. I, II, III
d. I, II, IV
__4. Which of the following is true?
a. Earth rotates on its axis as it revolves

around the sun.

b. Earth revolves once a month as it
rotates around the sun.
c. The sun revolves around the Earth
while Earth rotates.

B. Tell whether the following is an effect of Earth’s
Rotation or Earth’s Revolution.

____7. Occurrence of day and night - _______

____8. Change of Season - _______
____9. Unequal length of day and night - _______
____10. Apparent movement of the sun - _______
C. Activity
Objective
• Relate the movement of globe and to
days and night that occur and to
the cycle of completing a year on
earth.
• You will need:
globe flashlight/ lamp chalk
• What to do:
A. 1. Close the door, curtains, and turn off
the right inside the room.
2. Turn on your lamp/ flashlight. This will
serve as the sun.
3. Position the globe about 1 meter way
from the lamp/flashlight. Then, spin
the globe in a counter clock wise
direction. Observe the globe from all sides.
B. 1. Make an ellipse around the lamp,
trace it on the floor using a
chalk.
2. Mark your initial position. Then,
while carrying the globe, follow the
elliptic path on the floor. Make sure
that the globe spins gently in a
counterclockwise motion. Avoid
blocking the light going to the globe.
Questions:
1. What have you observed on the globe when
you it while it is placed in front of the light?
Relate it to how days and light occur.
