INTRODUCTION 3

A “Hydraulic Structure”:
• Is a structure submerged or partially submerged in any
body of water, which disrupts the natural flow of
water.
• It can be used to divert, stop, or otherwise manage
the natural flow of water; and
• It can be made from materials ranging from large rock
and concrete to obscure items such as wooden timber
or tree-trunks.
Classification:
Based on: - (i) Material; and (ii) Function
INTRODUCTION 4

Classification of hydraulic structures on the basis of

material by which it is constructed:-
• Earth fill structures,
• Rockfill structures,
• Concrete structures,
• Stone masonry structures,
• Timber structures, and
• Steel coffer structures

Classification on the basis of function:-

• Flow control structures: - used to measure discharge; e.g.
weirs, orifices, flumes, etc.
INTRODUCTION 5

• Diversion structures: - used to divert the main course of

water flow; e.g. cofferdams, weirs, canal headworks,
intakes, etc.
• Conveyance structures: - used to guide the flow from one
place to another; e.g. open channel, pressure conduits,
canals, sewers, etc.
• Collection structures: - used to collect water for disposal or
for some useful purposes such as water supply; e.g. drain
inlets, infiltration galleries, wells, etc.
• Energy dissipation structures: - used to prevent erosion
and structural damage; e.g. stilling basins, surge dams,
check dams, etc.
INTRODUCTION 6

• River training and water stabilizing structures: - used to maintain

river channel and water transportation; e.g. levees, cutoffs, locks,
piers, culverts, etc.
• Sediment and quality control structures: - used to control or remove
sediments and other pollutants; e.g. racks, screens, traps,
sedimentation tanks, filters, sluiceways, etc.
• Hydraulic machines: - used to convert energy from one form to
another; e.g. turbines, pumps, ramps, etc.
• Storage structures: - used for the purpose of storage of water; e.g.
dams, tanks, etc.
• Shore protection structures: - used to protect banks; eg. dikes,
groins, jetties, revetments, etc.
