Terminologies used in fashion

Apparel- Clothing, not necessarily fashionable
Silhouette- The outline of a garment. The outline or
contour that a garment creates when worn.
A- line
Shaped like letter A. Ideal for pear shaped body.
Hourglass
Trapeze
A trapeze dress is a style of dress that is very broad at the hem and very narrow at the shoulders. It’s
similar to an A-line dress. However, trapeze dresses frequently terminate below the knee and have a
broader hem than A-line dresses. This style moves like a dream and works best on athletic and long,
lean shapes.
Mermaid
Figure-hugging dress with a skirt that flares below the knees. Curvy women with hourglass body shapes tend to work best with mermaid wedding dresses, especially if the bodice is fitted.
If you're pear shaped, or if you have wide hips, it's best to avoid a mermaid style wedding dress, simply because it'll draw attention to this feature.
Sheath Dress
A slim, straight dress without a waistline
Empire Waist Dress
A high-waisted dress gathered just under the
bust and with a long, loose skirt.
Ensemble
An outfit made of separate but coordinated garments.
• Couture (koo-tour’) The French word for dressmaking; applied to fashion businesses
that make clothes to order.
Haute Couture – Exclusive custom-fitted fashions that are the pinnacle of the fashion industry. Haute couture, which is French for high sewing or dressmaking,
has become a global industry that drives clothing retail and a significant part of magazine sales.

Haute couture garments are made to measure and are typically produced from high-quality materials, which are sewn with extreme attention to detail and finish, often
by hand.
Avant Garde
Creative experimentation that fragments or rejects the norm. Avant-garde means being at the leading
edge or vanguard and is applied to the most advanced, progressive and experimental fashions of the
moment and prevents the industry from stagnating.
Ready to wear/ Pret-e-porter
Apparel that is mass produced (opposite of custom-made). French for ready-to-wear; literally,
“ready to carry.”
Mass / Knock off
A copy of a higher-priced style.
