will learn in this lesson.
Energy
the work done (W) on a system is equal to the
change in energy (ΔE) of the system,

W ΔE
Work Done on a System

1. Calculate the work done by lifting a 1 kg box by 2 m

from the floor onto the top of a wardrobe.

2. What happens to this work?

Work and Energy

When you do work on an object, you

give it energy.

For example, when you heat something

up, you give it thermal energy. When you
lift something up, you give
it gravitational potential energy.
Does the equation look familiar?
What happens if someone knocks the
wardrobe and the box falls off?

A Summary of Work and Energy Transfer

Organize the sentences in the next slide in the correct order.

Hint ( try to match them with the above pictures.
The system has zero energy at ground level until work is done by the external
world to lift it off the floor.
When the system falls, the stored (potential) energy becomes kinetic energy.
The system stops again at ground level and it does work on the external world by
transferring energy back to it.
The system gains (potential) energy that is stored while the system is elevated on
the wardrobe.
