 BASKETRY
•is the craft of making objects by weaving or
coiling together materials like grasses or twigs.
The resulting objects are called baskets.
 WEAVING
• - is the intertwining or interlacing of strands of material to make a whole object,
like a piece of fabric or basket. The strands run in two directions, the warp, or
lengthwise vertical strands, and the weft, or horizontal strands. There are three
types of weaving to create a basket: coiling, twining, and plaiting.
 COILING

• uses two types of materials, the bundle and the splint. The bundle makes
up the bulk of the basket. The splint is wrapped around the bundle to
hold it in place then poked through the previous layer of bundle with an
awl. A coiled basket can take months to years to complete.
 TWINING
• uses two types of material as well- the warp and the weft. The warp makes
the base and comes out like the spokes of a wheel. The weft is wrapped
around these spokes to create the basket. When the basket is finished the
warp that sticks out to the top is either turned under of cut off. A twined
basket can usually be finished in the afternoon.
 PLAITING
• is simply layering material over and under other pieces. It is
the simplest type of weaving and is often done in grade
school art classes. A plaited basket can be finished usually in
an afternoon.
TRADITIONAL BASKET FORMS
• The Burden Basket
This is a wonderful old Trough-Shaped Bamboo and
Rattan Burden Basket from the Ifugao Tribal people of Mountain
Province, Luzon Island, Philippines. This trough-shaped basket
doubles as a rain cape when it is inverted over the head. The
basket is constructed of a layer of woven bamboo woven within
inner and outer layers of rattan. These baskets are old and hard to
find. This type of basket is particularly useful for transporting wet
rice seedlings at transplanting time.
 STORAGE BASKETS

• These types of baskets are being

used for storage of household
items such as clothes and
blankets.
FOOD GATHERING BASKETS AND WINNOWING TRAY

• Serving trays and fish traps are examples of baskets used in food
gathering and preparation. Winnowing trays are used to separate rice
from its hull while serving trays are utilized as containers of rice and
other foods for consumption. Fish trap are used for fishing along
flowing streams.

 PERSONAL BASKETS

• These are either small bag, which are fitted beneath the arms
to carry tobacco and other personal belongings. Also, these
baskets serve as lunch bags carrying meals or other
important items such as jewelry.

•Baby carriers were also woven. The

child would be placed inside the carrier
and it could be staked into the ground
so the mother could gather materials or
food in the area.
SCHOOL BAG BASKET
The Pasiking, is the indigenous basket-
backpack found among the various ethno-
linguistic groups of Northern Luzon in the
Philippnes. Pasiking designs have sacred
allusions, although most are purely aesthetic.
These artifacts, whether handwoven
traditionally or with contemporary variations,
are considered exemplars of functional basketry
in the Philippines and among Filipinos.
 MARKET BAG BASKET

•Bayong- refers to bags originating from

the Philippines made by weaving dried
leaves. The leaves used for making the
bayong vary but the traditional bayong is
made from buri leaves in the Visayas and
pandan leaves in Luzon.

•These Containers could be used to

transport or gather food and other
items.
