Rationale

• Output focussed design module

• aims to bring together much of the technical content
of the programme
• infrastructural themes within a large project
• requires application of critical decision making and
design solutions, through the production of a design
folio, with recognition of the co-dependency of the
infrastructure themes.
Aims

• Enhance broad design skills developed in the design module, CIV805

• Develop a feasible design solution for an infrastructure project

• Produce a design folio for an element of infrastructure

• Specify and apply costing for the major elements of a project

• Present information in a coherent and professional manner

Learning Outcomes

1 Demonstrate expert appreciation and in-depth knowledge of the built

environment context in which design is applied and practiced

2 Evaluate safety, cost and construction impacts of a proposed infrastructure

scheme, formulating and illustrating detailed solutions

3 Prepare project documents to a professional standard demonstrating creativity

and innovation in the solution of problems
Approach

• Introductory lecture to introduce the project and brief and to clarify individual
projects.

• Seminars and meetings with a supervisor will allow discussion of ideas and
provide feedback. Regular consultation with a supervisor is key to the success
of this module.

• Students will be directed to read and will be expected to engage with a vast
range of documents and make personal, transparent and defensible decisions
leading to design solutions
Assessment
100% coursework
• Set exercise [20%]
Each student is required to present a Scoping Document which indicates his/her
state of readiness to carry out the detailed design calculations and produce
documents.
Maximum 500 words.

• Portfolio [80%]
Each student is required to provide a Design Report Folio. This Report will
include introduction/rationale, health & safety, Bill of Quantities, Specification,
Design calculations, and Drawings.
2500 words expected.

Feedback is given on an ongoing basis through regular meetings with a

supervisor. Written feedback will be provided on the initial scope of work before
progression to calculations and documents.
Time management

15 credit module = 150 effort hours

CW1 week 4 (20%) = 30 hours

CW2 week 12 (80%) = 120 hours

In reality 10 to 12 hours per week, in addition to

meetings with your supervisor
