Finding the Areas of Irregular Figures

Review:
Let’s do this activity for a
quick recall of finding the
area of a square or rectangle.
Match the square or
rectangle in Column A to its
area in
Column B. Write the letter of
the correct answer on your
answer sheet.
It may seem easy to find the area of a
plane figure like a rectangle or a square, but
what if the figure has more than four
sides or if it is irregular?

In this lesson, you will understand how to

partition an irregular figure into squares
and/or rectangles to find the area of the
irregular figure.
Neo and his younger sister Narlyn
made a flower garden as shown below.
They planted it with roses of different
colors.
Find the area of their garden.

What can you say about the shape of their garden?

How will you find its area? In how many ways can you
find its area?
Let’s take a look at the shape of their garden. How can you
break it up into rectangles and/or squares?
Let’s find the area of the irregular figure
following these steps.
Solution A. Using a Horizontal Cut
a. Draw a horizontal line to form a
rectangle and a square.
The illustration below shows how it is
done. Two figures are formed: square
X and rectangle Y.
b. Find the areas of the
square and the rectangle.
c. Get the area of the irregular
figure by adding the areas of
the square and the rectangle.

Total area of the irregular figure = area of X + area of Y

= 16 m2 + 36 m2
= 52 m2
Therefore, the total area of their garden is 52 m2.
Solution B: Using Vertical Cuts
a. Let’s cut up the figure into three rectangles using vertical lines.
We have rectangle X, rectangle Y and rectangle Z.
c. Then, add the areas of the three
rectangles to get the area of
the irregular figure.
Area of the irregular figure = X + Y + Z
= 12 m2 + 28 m2 + 12 m2
= 52 m2
Therefore, the total area of their garden is
52 m2.

To find the area of an irregular figure that is made
up of squares and rectangles:
• First, break or cut the figure into squares and/or
rectangles.
• Next, find the area of each square and/or
rectangle.
• Then, add the areas of the squares and/or
rectangles.

Finding the Areas of Irregular Figures

Read and answer each item carefully.
Review: Choose the letter of the correct
answer.
In this lesson, the learner’s skill is
developed by decomposing an irregular
figure into squares and rectangles. By
applying the knowledge of finding the
area of a square and a rectangle, the
learners can find the area of an
irregular figure by adding the areas of
the squares and rectangles.
This is the garden lot of Ravelo Family. Find the area
of the garden lot.
Whose garden lot is this?
What can you say about the shape of the garden
lot?
Who among you has gardens at home?
Do you love gardening?
What plants can we see in your garden?
How do you show care for your plants?
How do you find the area of the garden lot?
The shape of the garden lot is an irregular figure.
You can find its area by using the following steps:

Step 1: Split/divide it into regular shapes. In order to

find the area of this irregular shape, you must draw a
line to divide this into rectangles or squares.
Step 2: Find the
area of each square
or rectangle.
Step 3: Add the areas of the squares and/or rectangles
made to find the area of the irregular figure.
Total area of the irregular figure:
AT = AA + AB + AC
= 378 + 32 + 90
= 500
Step 4: Express the area in sq. cm. (cm2) or sq. m. (m2).
Activity 1:
Find the area of
the following
irregular figures.
Activity 2:
Solve the area of the
following irregular
figures.
Recap:
An irregular figure is made up of squares and rectangles.
To find the area of an irregular shape that is made up of
squares and rectangles:
1. Divide or cut the figure into squares and rectangles;
2. Find the area of each square or rectangle made;
3. Add the areas of the squares and/or rectangles made to
find the area of the irregular figure; and
4. Express the area in sq. cm. (cm2) or sq. m. (m2).
Read and answer each item carefully.
Evaluation: Choose the letter of the correct answer.

Finding the Area of Triangles,

Parallelograms and Trapezoids
Review:
Find the area of
the following
squares and
rectangles.
When we see a plane figure, we consider
not only its perimeter but also its area,
which is the amount of surface occupied
by the figure.

In this lesson, you will explore the area of

a parallelogram and
derive a formula for finding its area given
its base and height.
Diane and her groupmates have a parallelogram-
shaped vegetable garden. It has a base of 5 meters and a
height of 3 meters. They planted it with pechay. She is
interested in finding the area of the vegetable garden but
she does not know how to do it.

What did the problem ask for?

How can we help Diane?
Let us help Diane find the area of the parallelogram-
shaped vegetable garden.
The vegetable garden has the shape of a parallelogram.
Its base (b) is 5 m and its height (h) is 3 m.
Will the change in shape result to a
change in the figure’s area? No.

Will the parallelogram and the

resulting rectangle have the same
area? Yes.
So, what is the length and width of the rectangle?
length = 5 m ; width = 3 m
How are the base (b) and the height (h) related to
the length (l) and width (w) of the rectangle
formed?
b=l;h=w
By counting the number of squares covered by
the rectangle, where each square unit is equal to
1 sq. m, we say that the area of the rectangle is
15 sq. m.
Using the formula, the area of the rectangle is the product
of its length (l) and width (w).
Since the area of a rectangle can be found by multiplying its
length by its width, you can find the area of the
parallelogram by multiplying the base (b) by its height (h).
Therefore, the area of a parallelogram is the product of its
base and height.

Area of a Parallelogram = base (b) x height (h) or A = b x h

Let us find the area of the parallelogram-shaped
vegetable garden using the formula.
A=bxh
=5mx3m
= 15 m2
Thus, the area of their vegetable garden is 15 m2.
Let’s try another example. Let us find the area of
each parallelogram using the formula (A = b x h).
Express your answer in square units.
Complete the table.
Give the base and height of
each parallelogram. Then,
find its area using the
formula A = b x h.
(1 unit = 1 cm)
Find the area of the parallelogram with
the following dimensions.
Area is the measurement of the space contained
within a plane figure. To find the area of a
parallelogram:

• multiply the base and height.

2. The base of a parallelogram is 6 m and its height is
10 meters. What is the area of the parallelogram?

and its height is 8 cm.

Finding the Area of Triangles,

Parallelograms and Trapezoids
Review:
Write TRUE if the statement is a property of a
parallelogram and FALSE if it is not.
1. It has 2 pairs of parallel sides.
2. It has no right angles.
3. Opposite angles are congruent.
4. Adjacent angles are supplementary.
5. It has 4 angles.
Finding the area of a parallelogram is
introduced by transforming it into a
rectangle. Relating the formula A = l x w for
the rectangle, with the area of a
parallelogram, the learners can visualize
that multiplying the base of the
parallelogram by its height is getting its
area.
During the school
break, Carl, Ace and
Shane put up their
own vegetable garden
to have an additional
source of food. The
dimensions of their
vegetable gardens are
the following:
What is the shape of Carl’s garden? Ace’s
garden? Shane’s garden?
What is the area of each garden?
Who among them has the greatest area
of vegetable garden?
Carl’s garden has the shape of a
parallelogram, Ace’s garden has the shape of
a triangle and Shane’s garden has the shape
of a trapezoid.
Let’s explore and discover the area of each
garden!
Shane’s Garden
Trapezoid is the shape of
Shane’s vegetable garden.
The upper base of the
garden is 6 m and the
lower base is 8 m. Its
height is 7 m.
➢ If you draw another trapezoid that is exactly
the same as the given and arrange them as
shown below, a parallelogram is formed.
Among the three, Carl has the greatest
area of vegetable garden.
