Objectives

On completion of this topic you will be able to

know the following:

• Transducer

• Classification of transducer

AEI305.12 to 13 2
Transducer

• It is a device which converts one form of energy into

another form of energy

• The transducer may be electrical or mechanical

AEI305.12 to 13 3
Electrical Transducer

It is a device which converts any physical

quantity or physical conditions into electrical signal.

AEI305.12 to 13 4
Elements of transducer

AEI305.12 to 13 5
Transducer consists of two constituent elements

a) sensing element

b) Transduction element

AEI305.12 to 13 6
Sensing element

• It is the part of a transducer which basically senses the

change in physical quantity ( parameter)

AEI305.12 to 13 7
Transduction element

It is the part of transducer which transforms the response of

the sensing element into the electrical output.

AEI305.12 to 13 8
Classification

All electrical transducers are broadly classified under two

categories.

1. Active transducers

2. Passive transducers

AEI305.12 to 13 9
Active transducer

Active transducer, are self generating devices, operating

under energy conversion principle

AEI305.12 to 13 10
Active Transducer Examples

• Thermoelectric

• Piezoelectric

• Photovoltaic

• Pyroelectric

AEI305.12 to 13 11
Active transducer examples.

• Electrodynamic

• Electromagnetic

• Magnetostrictive

• Galvanic

AEI305.12 to 13 12
Passive transducer

• Passive transducers operate under energy controlling

principles

• Their working depends on external excitation

AEI305.12 to 13 13
Passive transducer

Example of passive transducer

• Resistive

• Inductive

• Capacitive

• Photo Conductive etc.

AEI305.12 to 13 14
• Piezo resistive

• Magneto resistive

• Thermo resistive

• Hall effect

• Radio active absorption

• Ionic conduction

AEI305.12 to 13 15
