CCP303.21 1
Objectives
On completion of the topic, you will be able to :
 Calculate Arithmetic Mean
 Continuous Series

 Step Deviation method

CCP303.21 2
Recap
 Continuous Series: Items are arranged in groups or
classes continuously
 3 methods of calculation of AM:
a) Direct method, b) Short-cut method and
c) Step Deviation method
 Arithmetic Mean – Direct method = ∑fm
N
 Arithmetic Mean - Short-cut method = A + ∑fd
N

CCP303.21 3
Calculation of Arithmetic Mean
Continuous Series
Step Deviation Method
Steps:
 Obtain the mid-point of each class (m)
 Select an assumed mean (A)
 Take deviation of each class mid-point from
assumed mean and name it (d)
 Divide deviations with a Class Interval ‘ c ‘ (dx)
 Multiply deviations by respective frequencies of
each class ( fdx )
 Obtain its total ( ∑fdx )
 Apply formula
CCP303.21 4
Formula

X or A.M. = A + ∑fdx X c
N
Where X = Arithmetic Mean
f = Frequency
c = Class Interval
d = (m-A) and dx = d/c
m = mid point
∑fdx = Sum of products of the deviations
and the frequencies
N = Total of frequency

40-50 40 45 +10 +1 +40
50-60 20 55 +20 +2 +40
N=200 ∑fdx= -40

CCP303.21 7
Solution Contd. Substitute
the values in
the formula
A.M. = A + ∑fdx X c
N
A.M. = 35 + -40 X 10
200
= 35 – 400/200
= 35 - 2

A.M. = 33 marks

40-50 20 45 +10 +1 +20
50-60 10 55 +20 +2 +20
N=110 ∑fdx= -40
CCP303.21 10
Solution contd: Substitute the
values in the
formula
A.M. = A + ∑fdx X c
N
A.M. = 35 + -40 X 10

A.M. = 31 marks

CCP303.21 12
Solution to Ex.3
CALCULATION OF ARITHMETIC MEAN A=45

Marks No. of Mid-points (m-45) dx=d/c fd

(x) Students (f) (m) d c=10
0-10 5 5 -40 -4 -20
10-20 14 15 -30 -3 -42
20-30 29 25 -20 -2 -58
30-40 21 35 -10 -1 -21
40-50 25 45 0 0 0
50-60 21 55 +10 +1 +21
60-70 10 65 +20 +2 +20
70-80 7 75 +30 +3 +21
80-90 15 85 +40 +4 +60
90-100 3 95 +50 +5 +15
N=150 ∑fdx=-4
CCP303.21 13
Solution contd
Here A=45, ∑fdx = -4, N = 150, c = 10, then
A.M. = A + ∑fdx X c
N
A.M. = 45 + -4 X 10
150
= 45 – 40/150
= 45 – 0.27
= 44.73
A.M. = 45 marks

CCP303.21 14
Important Points to Remember
