1. Consider the following distribution of daily wages of 50

workers of a factory.
Daily 100-120 120-140 140-160 160-180 180-200
Wages
Number of 12 14 8 6 10
workers

Find the mean daily wages of the workers of the factory by using
shortcut method

Solution:

Answer: The mean daily wage is Rs.145.2

2. Find the mean height of the following by using step deviation

method.
Height 135-140 140-145 145-150 150-155 155-160 160-165 165-170 170-175

Solution:

Answer: The mean height is 155.9cm

3. The mean of the following is 53. Find the missing frequencies.

Age(in 0-20 20-40 40-60 60-80 80-100 Total

years)

No. of 15 ___ 21 ___ 17 100

Solution:
Answer: x=18 and y = 29

4. Find the mean marks of the following

10 20 30 40 50 60 70 80
No. of 5 13 28 40 58 72 76 85

Solution:

Answer: The mean marks is 41.15

5. If median is 137 and mean is 137.05, then the value of the

mode is ________.

Solution:
3 Median = Mode + 2 Mean
⇒ 3(137) = Mode + 2(137.05)
⇒ 411 = Mode + 274.1
⇒ Mode = 136.9

6. Find the mode of the following data :

CLASS : 0- 20- 40- 60- 80- 100- 120-

20 40 60 80 100 120 140
FREQUENCY 6 8 10 12 6 5 3
:

SOLUTION :

For the given frequency distribution table, the maximum frequency is 12 which lies in
the class interval 60-80.
So, the modal class is 60-80.
∴ l=60, f =10, f =12, f = 6, h=20
0 1 2

12 − 10 2
⇒Mode = 60 + (̅̅̅̅̅̅̅̅̅̅̅̅̅̅̅̅̅̅̅̅̅) × 20 = 60 +( 8) x 20 = 60 + 5 = 65
2 × 12 − 10 − 6

Ans : The mode for the given frequency distribution is 65.

7. If the median of the following frequency distribution is 28.5,

then find the values of x & y.

CLASS INTERVAL FREQUENCY

0-10 5
10-20 x
20-30 20
30-40 15
40-50 y
50-60 5
TOTAL 60

SOLUTION :
⇒ 28.5 = 20 + [(60/2- (5+x))/20]x10
⇒ 8.5 = ((25-x)/2)
⇒ 17 = 25-x
⇒x=8
From (1), 8+y = 15
⇒y=7

Hence, the values of x and y are 8 and 7 respectively.

8. If the mode of the following frequency distribution table is 34.5,

then find the missing frequency x.

CLASS INTERVAL FREQUENCY

0-10 4
10-20 8
20-30 10
30-40 x

40-50 8
SOLUTION :
Given, mode for the frequency distribution table is 34.5
⇒ The modal class is 30-40.

∴ l=30, f =10, f = x, f = 8, h=10
