Average or Measureof CentralTendency
An average is a value which is representative
of a set of data. Average value may also be
termed as measures of central tendency. There
are five types of averages in common.
(i)Arithmetic average or mean
(ii)Median
(iii)Mode
(iv)Geometric Mean
(v) Harmonic Mean
Arithmetic Mean
Arithmetic mean of a set of observations is
their sum divided by the number of
observations. The arithmetic mean x of n
observations , . is given by
AM=
If the number occurs times, occurs
times and so on, then
AM= =
This is known as direct method.

image may hav e been corrupted. Restart y our computer, and then open the file again. If the red x still
appears, y ou may hav e to delete the image and then insert it again.

Median
Median is defined as the measure of the
central item when they are arranged in
ascending or descending order of magnitude.
⚫For odd number of items, say n, 3,4,5,7,9,10

Median = th item
⚫For even number of items, say n, then
median is arithmetic mean two middle items,
Median = mean of th and ( th items

6. Find the median of 5, 5, 7, 9, 11, 12, 15, 18

Sol: Average of

For grouped data
Median = l+

variable which occurs most frequently.

Harmonic mean
Harmonic mean of a series of values is defined as
the reciprocal of the arithmetic mean of their
reciprocals.Thus if H be the harmonic mean,then
= ( + +…..+ )

• For moderately asymmetrical distribution, the
emperical relationship among the arithmetic mean,
median and mode is,
Arithmetic mean—Mode = 3 (Arithmetic mean—
Median)
• For a positively skew distribution the relative
position of arithmetic mean,
median and mode is shown graphically in Fig.
• For negatively skew distribution the relative position
of mean, median arid mode will be reverse.
• For a symmetrical distribution mean, median and
mode coincide.
